Before humanity arrived, the world was already alive with light, water, soil, seed, wing, fin, fur, and breath. Genesis 1:1–2:3 tells of a creation repeatedly called good, a world humanity enters as creature and kin. John 1:1–5 reaches even further back, declaring that all things came into being through the Word, and that this life still shines in the darkness.
What changes when we stop imagining creation as scenery around the human story? What might “dominion” mean in a world that belongs to God? And what happens when ancient words about humanity, gender, power, rest, and divine purpose refuse to fit neatly into the categories we have inherited?

What happens when someone who has been told they are outside discovers that God has already made room for them within? On Sunday, August 16, we will read Isaiah 56:1–8, including the often-omitted promise to eunuchs: “I will give them a name better than sons and daughters.” It is a passage about bodies, belonging, memory, and the people religious communities have too often treated as cut off.

We will also hear Matthew 15:21–28, where a Canaanite woman refuses to disappear when mercy seems to stop at the boundary. She keeps speaking. She tells her story. And something in the encounter begins to shift. Her persistence leaves us with difficult and necessary questions about whose voices are heard, whose stories must be told again and again, and what faith has to do with any of it.

At St Andrew's we are starting a new worship series called Acts of Belonging. We will journey from Easter to Pentecost through the book of Acts, where the earliest Jesus-followers learn (sometimes awkwardly, sometimes beautifully) how to become a community of resurrection in real life. Not a perfect church. A practising church. The kind that figures out how to love neighbours, resist corrupting power, and keep widening the circle of invitation and belonging.

If you’ve ever felt burnt out, lonely, anxious, grief-heavy, or just unsure what you believe anymore, you’re not confused or behind or somehow wrong. You are human. Acts of Belonging is for the everyone: the hurt, the hopeful, the skeptical, the “I’m curious but cautious,” and the people who’ve never done church before and would love a map. We’ll explore what an anti-empire faith looks like, not as a slogan, but as a way of living that chooses mutual care over scarcity and courageous welcome over fear.

Come as you are, bring your questions, and take the next step at your own pace. We’ll be celebrating membership on May 10 (a joyful invitation to belong more intentionally), and we’ll keep building toward Pentecost: that moment when the Spirit reminds us we’re not alone, and we’re not powerless.
