The Messiah of Malachi 3:1

Malachi records YHWH saying, “I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me” (Mal. 3:1). The New Testament identifies that messenger as John the Baptist, the one who prepared the way “before Yeshua” (Mt. 11:10; Lk. 7:27).

Think about that:
Malachi says John would prepare the way before “YHWH.”
The Gospels say that John prepared the way before “Him,” referring to Yeshua.

That is no minor detail. It is a powerful declaration of the Messiah’s deity.

And Malachi 3:1 goes further: The One who comes is called “ha’adon,” “the Lord,” and He comes to “His Temple.” Yeshua is not merely God’s representative or a human messenger sent by YHWH. He is the divine Messiah, the Lord who comes to His Temple.

The Hebrew term עֵזֶר (ʿezer)

In his commentary on Genesis, Dr. Fruchtenbaum makes an important observation about this Hebrew term. Genesis 2:18 records the first divine declaration that something was not good: “It is not good for the man to be alone.” The man was incomplete without the woman. Therefore, God said, “I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

The Hebrew word translated “helper” is ʿezer. Far from being demeaning, the term is also used of God Himself as the Helper of His people (e.g., Deut. 33:7, 26, 29; Ps. 20:2). The word therefore does not imply inferiority, subordination in worth, or diminished significance.

The woman was created as the one corresponding to the man: fitted to him, complementary to him, and able to supply what he lacked. She was created to correspond to him physically, socially, and spiritually.

One striking contrast in Malachi 1 is this: While Israel’s priests were dishonoring YHWH through careless worship, the prophet looked ahead to a day when YHWH’s name would be great among the nations, “from the rising of the sun even to its setting” (Mal. 1:11).

Malachi’s vision reaches beyond his own generation to a time when YHWH will be honored throughout the earth and the nations will worship Him as He deserves.

What an encouraging reminder! Human unfaithfulness never diminishes YHWH’s greatness. It also calls us to consider whether our own worship reflects the honor due His holy name.
