Peace is something that can be hard to come by in our hurried culture and busy lives. And it’s something I struggled with a lot in the early days of parenthood, when I’d never really struggled with it before.
Looking at the story of Peter walking on the water to Jesus, taken from Matthew 14, I was struck by one particular verse:
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
- Matthew 14:31
Never before had I taken notice of the juxtaposition here. It says that *immediately*, Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. He was right there, waiting, ready to help as soon as Peter needed him. Which makes the next question even more poignant: “Why did you doubt?”
I had to ask myself this question: If Jesus is always there, ready to catch me, why do I ever doubt that he has control? Why do I try to take things into my own hands when I have a good God right there waiting to help?
If you’ve ever felt this way, I just want to encourage you that Jesus is always with you, ready to catch you, so there is no reason to doubt that he’s in control and he’s with you. Putting that much trust in someone you can’t see can be scary, but I can tell you that he’s caught me time after time. He will do the same for you. And as he does, that trust grows easier.
