As students go back to school
this week, we pray for their year of learning and for all those who support them.

Lord Jesus
Thank you for this new year of learning. We pray for students, teachers & all others involved in school communities. May they be strengthened in wisdom, may they have the courage to face the challenges of each day & may they find you to be the source of all truth. Amen.

Many Anglican churches will need to wither—and, in many cases, decline substantially—before they recognize that their survival depends not on continually creating new expressions of Anglicanism, but on returning to the classical Anglicanism we inherited from the Reformers.

The problem is not simply one of worship style, demographics, or institutional strategy; it is fundamentally theological. Anglicanism was never meant to be an endlessly adaptable identity capable of accommodating every theological direction. Its strength lay in a coherent core: Scripture as the supreme authority, the catholic faith expressed in the ancient creeds, the Reformation doctrines of grace, the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church, and the theological inheritance expressed in the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles.

Various attempts to reinvent Anglicanism may sustain institutions for a time, but they cannot ultimately replace the theological foundation that gave Anglicanism its identity in the first place. When inherited cultural influence, institutional wealth, and established habits disappear, churches will be forced to confront the more fundamental question of what they actually believe and why they exist.

The answer cannot be found in endlessly producing new versions of Anglicanism, but in recovering the classical Anglican synthesis: biblical, catholic, Reformed, sacramental, and liturgical Christianity. Anglicanism will not be renewed by becoming something else; it will be renewed by recovering what it has received.
