40th Anniversary of the UCC Apology for Residential Schools

It was my privilege to accept the invitation to the Indigenous Learning Centre at Laurentian University in Sudbury yesterday (Aug 15/26), the 40th Anniversary of the UCC Apology for Residential Schools. It was a very emotional and wonderful day.

Meeting started at 10:30 with guest speakers, some of whom knew Alberta Billy. In Nov 1985, Alberta broke from her regularly planned speech to call on the UC to apologize for its role in colonization and the resulting loss of Indigenous language, culture, and spirituality. In response, during the August 1986 General Council meeting, Moderator Robert Smith delivered an official apology to the Elders, waiting in a tepee.

This story was told to us yesterday by those who knew Alberta! It was very emotional.

Guest speakers included The Very Rev. Stan McKay—former Moderator of the United Church of Canada (92-94) Indigenous elder, wisdom keeper, and leader, from Manitoba along with others.

It ended with a walk to a memorial site.

I have some pictures to share. However, we were left with a question: “What are we doing about this Apology now?”

We were asked if each church would at least read the Apology at service on Oct 4th.

I ask for the question to be posed to all….”What are we going to do Now?"

Our prayers are with the LGBTQ community in Berlin, Germany, as a terrorist drove a van into a Pride festival event last night, and also attacked people with a machete.

One person was killed and at least 29 others injured. The suspect has been identified and is still at large and being sought by police.

An attack on one LGBTQ community is an attack on LGBTQ communities everywhere.

We pray for the victims in Berlin, for their families and for those responding to this tragedy as medics, police and community leaders. We pray also for the police as they search for the person or persons who wreaked this chaos on an event meant to celebrate the community, solidarity and joy of Pride.

Bring your comfort, your justice and your healing, dear God.

In the name of the One who brings peace. Amen.
