St. Peter Claver was born in Verdú, Catalonia, Spain, in 1580. At the age of 20, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1602. In 1610, he arrived in Cartagena, in what was then the Spanish colony of the New Kingdom of Granada, now Colombia. There, he dedicated his life to the physical and spiritual care of enslaved Africans.

He died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654, after more than four decades of ministry among enslaved people. He became known as the “slave of the slaves”, reflecting his own commitment to being “the slave of the Africans forever.”

He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and is remembered as a patron of enslaved people, Colombia, and ministry among African peoples.

His feast day is celebrated on September 9.
