Don’t Miss the Warning Signs of Pride

“So then, Your Majesty, follow my advice. Stop sinning, do what is right, and be merciful to the poor. Then you will continue to be prosperous.”

Daniel 4:27 (GNT)

Too often when life is going well, we become prideful. And pride often leads to a downfall. As Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall” (NLT).

Pride blinds us, making it easy to miss the warning signs of an impending fall.

You can make some simple choices that will help keep you humble—and help you spot the warning signs of a coming fall before it’s too late. If you find yourself in a position of influence or wealth, for example, you might simply need to go home, mow your own lawn, wash your own dishes, and take care of the people around you.

But no matter who you are or what your life is like, you also need to be on the lookout for messages from God that you’re headed down the wrong prideful path and need to be humble enough to turn around.

Nebuchadnezzar’s life is a clear picture of this. God cared enough about this pagan king to warn him about what was coming his way in Daniel 4. God could have just removed Nebuchadnezzar from power—but instead he warned him and gave him a chance to change his ways. God gave him a dream, he brought Daniel to interpret the dream, and Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar what was going to happen and how to avoid it. You can’t get much clearer than that!

Daniel told the king, “So then, Your Majesty, follow my advice. Stop sinning, do what is right, and be merciful to the poor. Then you will continue to be prosperous” (Daniel 4:27 GNT).

Through Daniel, God gave Nebuchadnezzar three things to do and said success would follow. But the king chose to ignore this warning.

Is it possible you are ignoring or missing God’s warning signs too?

Maybe you’re having conflict in a relationship. You’re just passing it off as the other person’s problem, but God wants to use it as a warning sign—to show you that you’re off track in some area of your life.

It could be a temptation you’re battling because you’re continually putting yourself in a bad situation. Or maybe it’s chaos and confusion in your life. These all are signs that you’re not trusting God—that you’re trying to do life on your own terms.

God’s trying to tell you through these warning signs: “Stop sinning! Come back to me!”

If you’re heading down the wrong path, God loves you enough to give you a warning. Listen to his warning, repent of your pride, and return to him in humility today. He has given us this promise: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 NIV).

Talk It Over
• How have you been blinded by pride in the past? What warning signs did you miss or choose to ignore?
• Do you think God might be trying to warn you now that you’re heading down a wrong path? What do you think he’s saying to you?
• What are practical steps you can take to choose humility over pride in your daily life?

Scripture Based Prayer

“Above all, taking the shield of faith
with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”
Ephesians 6:16 NKJV

You are the Almighty God, and Your Son is my victorious Champion. As a warrior in the strategic purposes of God in my generation, I put on the full armor of God. I walk in the strong authority of Your name, Lord Jesus Christ! I take up the shield of faith, enabling me to extinguish the fiery arrows of the evil one.

I am now ready to take up the powerful sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word, and I proclaim, “No weapon formed against me will prosper.” I proclaim Your Word as Jesus did. I pray the Word as the early apostles did, and praise the Word of God as the disciples did. I am more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. This is my victorious spiritual warfare declaration for Your glory, oh God.

Amen and Amen!

Steps of Faith

Then the LORD asked Moses, “Who makes a person’s mouth?...Is it not I, the LORD?”
Exodus 4:11, NLT

Beloved, sometimes we almost miss the great things God wants to do in and through us because we talk ourselves out of believing what He says. When God told Moses to go and tell Pharaoh to free God’s people from slavery, Moses said, “I can’t do that. I’m not a good speaker.” God’s response was a question: “Moses, who made your tongue?” He was saying, “I’ve already put in you exactly what you need. Take a step of faith, and you’ll discover gifts inside that you’ve never realized are there.”

Don’t let the size of your dreams or the challenges to your dreams intimidate you. And don’t let naysayers discourage you from pressing forward. You have to realize that God will never put a dream in your heart without first equipping you with everything you need to accomplish it. If you feel that you don’t have the necessary wisdom, talent, or resources, remind yourself that God has matched you with your world. Do as Moses did and keep taking steps of faith, and God will do the rest.

“Father, thank You for the gifts and talents You put in me to accomplish my dream. Thank You that I don’t have to feel I have everything I need in order to move forward. I declare that I will keep taking steps of faith and trust You to get me to where You want me to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Testing Comes before Blessing

“I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them.”

Zechariah 13:9 (NLT)

Some prayers are answered immediately, but others take weeks, months, or even years. You probably know this all too well! But there’s good news: While you’re praying for God’s answer, you’ll learn some things that you can’t learn any other way.

In the waiting, there is blessing. One of the blessings is that you learn more about yourself when you don’t instantly get everything you want.

For two of the most important prayers I’ve ever prayed, God took 13 years to answer one of them and 25 years for the other. But he answered! They were the most important prayers in my life at that time. Why did it take so long? Because while I was working on the prayer, God was working on me.

When you’re going through fire, do you ever wonder why you have to go through it? It’s for testing and purification.

As you pray about something over and over again, you face tests that reveal more about you.God says in Zechariah 13:9, “I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold” (NLT).

You test gold by putting it in a big vat and heating it until it gets so hot that all the impurities are burned off. How do metalsmiths know when gold and silver are pure? When they can see their reflection in them.

God can see his reflection in you when the impurities have burned out of your life—after you’ve been through the fire. He says that, after he’s done the testing and purification, “They will call on my name, and I will answer them” (Zechariah 13:9 NLT).

Answered prayer comes after the test. Before every blessing, there is a testing. God tests you with stress before he trusts you with success. These are the principles of persistent prayer.

God is going to test you before he blesses you. And in that test, you’re going to learn a lot about yourself. If you give up praying, you’re never going to learn the lessons that help you become more like Jesus.

Keep praying with persistence each day. And remember that after the testing, the blessing will come.

Talk It Over

• Think of a time when God allowed you to go through the fire before he answered your prayer. In what ways did you grow through that experience?
• Why is it important for you to become more like Jesus?
• How is God testing you right now? What will you do today to be persistent in prayer?

God wants to fill you!
Beloved,

Do you ever go through your day with your mind stuck on the negative — guilt, resentment, unforgiveness, anger, worry, doubt?

Today, I want to remind you that when you empty out the negative, you make space for the positive things meant to reside there.

Life happens, but if you let go of the guilt, the blame, the worry, the unforgiveness, God will show up with brand-new beginnings and blessings!

Shouts of Praise

“But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’”
Jonah 2:9, NIV

BELOVED, today’s Scripture was spoken by the prophet Jonah while he was inside the huge fish that God sent to spare his life after he had disobeyed God’s command. You can imagine how it reeked almost unbearably inside the fish’s digestive system. For eight verses, Jonah had talked about how bad his life was, how he was in the depths of despair, how he didn’t see a way out. All that was true, but it didn’t change his situation. Then in the midst of the stink and difficulties, he suddenly offered up a sacrifice of praise and surrender. That’s what caused God to go to work and have the fish put Jonah back on dry ground to fulfill his destiny.

You may be in a stinky situation today. You could describe what you’ve done wrong, how you aren’t treated right, or how you’re not getting well. But that creates an atmosphere of doubt, defeat, and negativity that keeps you where you are. Be a Jonah and send up a shout of praise. Send up faith. Send up hope. You’re about to see that negative situation turn around.

SAY A Prayer

“Father, thank You that when I make a mistake and bring trouble upon myself as Jonah did, You cover me with mercy and give me second chances. Today I will offer up a shout of grateful praise to You and declare You as my Lord. I believe You will get me to where I’m supposed to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Your harvest of blessing is coming!
Beloved,

Harvest season is here! Seeds sown in spring yield fruit in the fall. Likewise, seeds of faith produce a harvest of blessing.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

How to Focus Your Bible Study on a Particular Topic

Discovering God’s wisdom through intentional, Scripture-based study.

Many Christians wonder how they can better understand God’s Word and apply it to their everyday lives.
One powerful way to grow in knowledge and wisdom is by studying the Bible topically. This method allows us to dive deep into specific areas of interest, answering life’s pressing questions by exploring relevant passages throughout Scripture. For example, a recent question from Jacob addresses whether being unliked by others compromises our witness as followers of Christ. In answering this, we can look to Scripture as our ultimate guide.
This approach can equip anyone to gain insights directly from the Bible, empowering us to grow in spiritual maturity and understanding.
The key is knowing how to methodically study Scripture around a particular subject.

Let’s look at how to do this, using Jacob's query as a framework.

Step 1: Begin by Identifying Your Topic
Before diving into your study, clearly identify the topic or question you want to explore. In Jacob’s case, the topic centers on popularity and whether striving to be liked by others can hinder our faithfulness to God. Questions like, “Is it wrong if people around me don’t like me?” and “When does seeking acceptance compromise my witness?” set the stage for our Bible study.
Whatever your topic whether it’s forgiveness, anxiety, or humility be specific about what you want to learn. Then, formulate a question that will guide your study, just like Jacob did.

Step 2: Search for Scriptures
Next, use a Bible concordance, study app, or software like Logos to search for relevant verses. For Jacob’s question, we can start by searching for keywords such as "please," "pleased," or "approval." When you search for these words, multiple verses will come up, some more relevant than others.
For example, passages like Galatians 1:10 or 1 Thessalonians 2:4–6 directly address the issue of pleasing others versus pleasing God. Here’s what Paul writes in Galatians 1:10:

“Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
This verse highlights that seeking human approval can conflict with our duty to serve Christ. When the truth of the gospel is at stake, being liked by others should not be our priority.
Similarly, in 1 Thessalonians 2:4–6, Paul emphasizes speaking not to flatter or manipulate people for personal gain but to serve God with integrity.
Colossians 3:22 further advises against “people-pleasing” for shallow reasons, urging believers to serve with sincerity, “fearing the Lord” in all they do. This theme is reinforced in 1 Corinthians 10:31–33, where Paul mentions his desire to avoid offending others for the sake of the gospel, but always with the goal of salvation and upbuilding.

Step 3: Interpret the Verses in Context

It’s important to read each verse in its context to avoid misunderstanding. As you study a passage, ask yourself questions like:
• What is the surrounding message or theme of the chapter?
• Who is speaking, and to whom are they speaking?
• What was the cultural or historical context at the time?
For example, Galatians 1:10 comes right after Paul’s stern warning against false teachers who distort the gospel. His focus is on upholding the truth of Christ, regardless of whether it pleases people.

This context helps us see that sometimes, being disliked is part of faithful gospel witness.
In contrast, 1 Corinthians 10:31–33 shows Paul seeking to please others in non-essential matters to avoid unnecessary offense, with the ultimate goal of their salvation.
This teaches us that pleasing people is sometimes good if it helps build relationships and leads others to Christ, as long as it doesn’t compromise our faith.

Step 4: Synthesize and Summarize Key Insights

Once you’ve gathered several relevant passages, it’s time to synthesize the information.
Ask yourself: How do these verses answer my initial question?
In Jacob’s case, we can see a balanced approach emerge from Scripture. It’s clear that while we shouldn’t go out of our way to be disliked, there are times when standing firm for the truth of the gospel may make us unpopular.
Pleasing people is acceptable when it helps to lead them to Christ, but it should never be done at the expense of compromising our faith or values.

Here are key insights based on the Scriptures we’ve studied:

1. It’s okay to displease people when standing for the gospel (Galatians 1:10). If our loyalty to Christ offends others, our allegiance remains with God.
2. Avoid people-pleasing for personal gain (1 Thessalonians 2:4–6). Flattery, manipulation, or seeking approval for selfish reasons is condemned.
3. Seek to build others up, not yourself (Romans 15:1–2). We are called to put others’ spiritual growth ahead of our own desires for approval.
4. Maintain sincerity and the fear of the Lord in your relationships (Colossians 3:22). Pleasing others is fine if it stems from genuine love and service to God.

Step 5: Apply What You’ve Learned

Bible study is more than just intellectual exercise; it’s about transformation. Once you’ve drawn conclusions from your study, consider how you can apply what you’ve learned to your life.

In Jacob’s case, he might ask himself: Am I more concerned about what others think of me than about being faithful to Christ?
Do I try to please people for my own benefit, or am I genuinely serving them out of love for God?
We can all apply these principles in our daily interactions.
There will be times when our faithfulness to God requires us to say or do things that others may not like. At other times, we should seek to accommodate others and put their needs above our own when it doesn’t compromise the gospel. The key is discerning when to stand firm and when to yield.

Step 6: Pray for Guidance

As with any Bible study, it’s essential to pray for wisdom and guidance. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate God’s Word and help you understand how to apply it. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Bible study should always lead to deeper dependence on God. As we seek His truth, we grow in our ability to represent Christ faithfully and love others well.

Conclusion
Studying the Bible on a specific topic can be deeply rewarding, helping you answer important questions and grow in spiritual wisdom. By following a methodical approach identifying your topic, searching Scripture, interpreting in context, and applying what you learn you can draw closer to God and gain valuable insights for everyday life.
Whether you’re wrestling with questions like Jacob’s about balancing popularity and faithfulness or any other topic, remember that God’s Word provides the answers you need. Dive in, and discover the life-changing wisdom available to you.

Freedom

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:32, NIV

Beloved, Abraham left his home at the call of God, with the promise of His great blessing. But in his journeys in Genesis 12 and 20, he lied to Pharaoh and later to King Abimelek that his beautiful wife, Sarah, was his sister, because he feared they would kill him so they could have her. When the truth came out, Abraham was shamed by them. In Genesis 26, many years later, Abraham’s son Isaac committed the same cowardly act with his wife, Rebekah. Notice how that same negative trait was being passed down.

It’s the same way today. It can be a spirit of low self-esteem. Everyone in your family feels unworthy, not good enough, inferior. Or maybe it’s a spirit of mediocrity. No one in your family thinks they can get ahead. Do yourself a favor and get rid of that spirit. You’re made in the image of God. You have royal blood flowing through your veins. Start expecting to rise higher. Start declaring God’s promises over your life. Break that negative cycle and set your family on a new course of freedom.

A Prayer
“Father, thank You that You have made me in Your image and that I am Your child. Thank You that Jesus has redeemed me and set me free from sin and guilt and negative traits that have been passed down to me. I declare that the forces for me are greater than the forces against me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
