This Sunday - Trinity Sunday

Guest Speaker: Amy Haynes

“Majesty, Mercy, Mystery” - Genesis 1:1-2:4a and Matthew 28:16-20

On this Trinity Sunday, we step away from rigid "job descriptions" for God and explore the Triune God through the lens of Majesty, Mercy, and Mystery. By examining Lectionary texts, we will hear an invitation to lay down the colonial urge to dominate, own, and control. We will instead listen to the invitation of the Holy to embrace a collective imagination of ecological stewardship, mutual solidarity, and faithful (restful) discipleship in a divisive world.

Amy Haynes is an artist, anti-oppression activist, and a graduate of both the Vancouver School of Theology and Montreal Dio. Approved for ordained ministry with the United Church of Canada, she has served the national church in various roles, most recently on the Equity Support Team at General Council 45 here in Calgary. Amy is passionate about womanist theology, adult education, and writing. She lives in Calgary with her two children, and when she isn't working to contribute to a world that points to God's abundance, you can find her practicing hot yoga, bird-watching, or enjoying a rainy day.

This Sunday, May 10th - Potluck after the service!

Guest Speaker: Jon Coutts

"Gamaliel's Rule" - Acts 5:17-42

When people were about to stone Christ's disciples, Gamaliel said to wait to see if their movement died out on its own or ended up being of God. At worst it was a way to drown the disciples in indifference. At best it was a call for patient discernment. When we feel haste to cast judgment on others, there might be something to learn from it.

Jon Coutts was an evangelical pastor in western Canada before earning his PhD at the University of Aberdeen, and then teaching theology and ethics in England and then Calgary. He is the author of several books, including a book on forgiveness called A Shared Mercy. Jon enjoys films and fiction, and watching sports with his family.

This Sunday, May 3 - Communion

Guest Speaker: Terry Fach

"Blessing" - Genesis 12:1-9; Matthew 9:9-13; 18-26

Sooner or later everyone comes to ask three questions: "Who am I?" "Why am I here?" "How then shall I live?" We can find the answers in this sacred story in Genesis 12. We find our identity in God's blessing. We find our purpose and our way of life in seeking to be a blessing to others. As the body of Christ, we (like Abraham and Sarah, and Matthew) are called to bless all people with gospel that God "loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full off the steadfast love of the Lord" (Psalm 33:5).

Terry is well-known to the TMC community, having served as Transitional Interim Pastor from September 2024 - February 2026. Retired from pastoral work, he now works in a part-time role supporting, encouraging, and advising the congregations and ministers of 13 Presbyterian churches in southern Alberta.

This Sunday - Guest Speaker: Jon Olfert
"Meeting God Outside of the Sanctuary" - Job 12:7-10

How do we understanding suffering? Life is messy, but through the grace of God's love and wisdom, we can move toward accepting Holy mystery.

In 1997, Jon stumbled into a job as a summer camp counsellor working with groups of kids in the great outdoors. He liked it so much he never left. Prior to Valaqua, Jon worked as a Counsellor and Program Director at Camp Shekinah and as a Program Coordinator for River Valley Programs in Edmonton. Since 2006, Jon has been the Director of Camp Valaqua, providing safe and supportive spaces for kids to grow.
In his decades of work at various camps, it has been crystal clear to Jon just how powerful the impact the intentional community formed at camp has on the campers, staff, and volunteers. It is his greatest joy to watch campers, staff, and volunteers grow in all sorts of ways!

Derek Cook serves as the Director of the Canadian Poverty Institute at Ambrose University in Calgary. This Sunday: Guest Speaker: Jon Coutts

“The Lord Was Not In The Fire” - 1 Kings 19:1-18, Hebrews 11:39-40

It's common to fixate on the spectacular moments in the Bible and think that, if we're good Christians, that's what we should expect. We elevate the amazing and the successful, and lose heart when being good is such a grind. But with Elijah we learn that God regularly works through normal people faithfully doing mundane things.
