GREETINGS FROM THE BISHOPS OF THE UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF CANADA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF UKRAINE’S INDEPENDENCE
Reverend Fathers, dear brothers and sisters in Christ!
Glory to Jesus Christ!
On August 24, 2026, Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of her state independence. For the Ukrainian people, this is not simply a commemorative date on the state calendar. It is a day when we become especially deeply aware of the gift of freedom, the price by which it is won, and the responsibility that each generation bears for preserving it.
This year, Ukrainians again meet this day in a time of struggle and severe trial. For more than twelve years, Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression, and for the fifth year, a full-scale invasion that has brought countless human sufferings, torture, death, the destruction of cities and villages, the separation of families, and millions of forcibly displaced people continues.
The war does not spare spiritual holy places, the sacred spaces of prayer. Churches are coming under attack, including the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s oldest Orthodox holy places, whose spiritual significance extends far beyond her boundaries. For centuries, her holy places, churches, and caves have been places of prayer, monastic asceticism, and spiritual life for many generations of Orthodox Christians. Therefore, attacks on such holy places are not merely physical destruction of sacred space, but also a painful blow to the spiritual and historical memory of the people.
Every day, the war touches every corner of Ukraine and the lives of her people. Even Ukrainian cities and villages far from the front lines are subjected to deadly missile and drone attacks, bringing new losses and destruction.
At this time of severe trial and suffering, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada stands prayerfully beside our brothers and sisters in Christ, lifting before the Lord their pain, sorrows, hopes, and petitions. Guided by the apostolic exhortation, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17), we pray and call upon everyone to join in this prayer.
We ask the All-Merciful Lord to show His great mercy and love to those who, in the words of the Saviour, “lay down their life for their friends” (Jn. 15:13).
Let us pray that the Lord grant rest to the souls of all who have given their lives for their neighbours, and establish them “where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.”
Let us pray for the soldiers who continue to carry out their service, that the Lord may be their protection and defence, guard them from mortal wounds, increase their strength, and return them alive to their families.
Let us pray for the wounded, not only those who have suffered on the battlefield, but also those whose lives and health have been devastated by missile and drone strikes in the cities and villages of Ukraine, often in the midst of peaceful sleep. May the Lord heal their bodily and spiritual wounds and grant them strength to walk the path of recovery.
Let us pray for prisoners of war, for those who are missing, and for all those whose families await them. May the Lord not abandon them in this time of trial, but strengthen them in spirit, and lead them to liberation and return to their loved ones.
Let us pray for parents who have buried their children, and for children who have been left without parents: for mothers and fathers who raise their children amid the sounds of air-raid sirens, explosions, and missile strikes; for all who live each day in anxiety, not knowing what the next dawn will bring.
Let us pray for all who tirelessly sustain the life of Ukraine through their work, for medical workers, rescuers, teachers, volunteers, critical infrastructure workers, Orthodox chaplains, and all who, despite loss, fear, and exhaustion, continue to serve their neighbour. May the Lord be their strength, their protection, and their hope.
Let us pray for all Ukrainians whose lives today are lived far from their native land, but whose hearts, prayers, active civic engagement, and sacrificial support remain inseparably connected to Ukraine. May the Lord give them strength to be an unwavering voice of support for Ukraine throughout the world.
The Apostle James reminds us that faith is manifested in deeds. Therefore, today, when the war has once again scattered millions of Ukrainians far from their homes, our prayer is called to find its continuation in concrete service and mutual support.
The parishes of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada must remain places where those in need can find support and love. We must remember that the journey of forced displacement and adaptation to a new life can be long and difficult. Therefore, our ministry must be filled with Christian compassion, patience, and attentiveness to each person, with an understanding of their individual history and needs.
On this festive day, we, as the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, express our profound gratitude to the Government of Canada, which continues to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine and her people. This support is a testimony that there are those in the world who understand the price of freedom, human dignity, and the right of a people to determine their own future. We pray for all who, in various ways, help Ukraine endure and defend her right to a peaceful and free life.
On the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s Independence, we prayerfully extend our greetings to all on this occasion. May the words of the Psalmist: “Blessed is the man who puts his trust in the Lord” (Ps. 40:4) also be our prayer and spiritual guidance during this time of trial.
May the Lord help us to remain faithful in prayer, steadfast in goodness, merciful toward our neighbour, and wise in our service. May He preserve Ukraine, strengthen her people, and lead her to peace, freedom, and renewal.

УКРАЇНСЬКОЇ ПРАВОСЛАВНОЇ ЦЕРКВИ КАНАДИ З НАГОДИ 35-Ї РІЧНИЦІ НЕЗАЛЕЖНОСТІ УКРАЇНИ
Всечесні отці, дорогі у Христі брати і сестри!
Слава Ісусу Христу!
24 серпня 2026 року Україна відзначає 35-ту річницю відновлення своєї державної незалежності. Для українського народу це не просто пам’ятна дата державного календаря. Це день, коли особливо глибоко усвідомлюється дар свободи, ціна, якою вона здобувається, та відповідальність, яку кожне покоління несе за її збереження.
Цьогоріч цей день українці знову зустрічають в час боротьби та тяжкого випробування. Вже понад дванадцять років Україна протистоїть російській агресії, а п’ятий рік – повномасштабному вторгненню, яке принесло незліченні людські страждання, катування смерть, руйнування міст і сіл, розділення родин та мільйони вимушених переселенців.
Війна не щадить і духовних святинь – священного простору молитви. Під ударом опиняються храми, серед яких – Києво-Печерська лавра, одна з найдавніших православних святинь України, духовне значення якої виходить далеко за її межі. Її святині, храми та печери впродовж століть були місцем молитви, чернечого подвигу і духовного життя багатьох поколінь православних християн. Тому посягання на такі святині є не лише фізичним руйнуванням сакрального простору, але й болючим ударом по духовній та історичній пам’яті народу.
Війна щодня торкається кожного куточка України та життя її народу. Навіть віддалені від лінії бойових дій українські міста і села зазнають смертоносних ракетних і дронових атак, несучи нові втрати та руйнування.
У цей час тяжкого випробування і страждання Українська Православна Церква Канади молитовно стоїть поруч зі своїми братами і сестрами у Христі, підносячи до Господа їхній біль, скорботи, надії та прохання. Керуючись апостольським закликом: «Безперестанно моліться» (1 Сол. 5:17), ми молимося і закликаємо кожного долучатися до цієї молитви.
Ми просимо Всемилостивого Господа явити Своє велике милосердя і любов до тих, хто, за словом Спасителя, «душу свою покладає за друзів своїх» (Ін. 15:13).
Молімося, щоб Господь упокоїв душі всіх, хто віддав своє життя за своїх ближніх, та оселив їх «там, де немає ні болю, ні скорботи, ні зітхання, але життя безкінечне».
Молімося за воїнів, які продовжують нести своє служіння, – щоб Господь був їхнім покровом і захистом, оберігав їх від смертоносних ран, укріпляв їхні сили та повертав живими до їхніх родин.
Молімося за поранених – не лише тих, хто постраждав на полі бою, але й тих, чиє життя і здоров’я були скалічені ракетними та дроновими ударами у містах і селах України, часто серед мирного сну. Нехай Господь зцілить їхні тілесні та душевні рани й дарує їм силу пройти шлях одужання.
Молімося за полонених, за зниклих безвісти та за всіх, кого чекають їхні родини. Нехай Господь не залишить їх у час випробування, укріпить їх духом і приведе до визволення та повернення до рідних.
Молімося за батьків, які поховали своїх дітей, і за дітей, які залишилися без батьків; за матерів і батьків, які виховують своїх дітей під звуки повітряних тривог, вибухів і ракетних ударів; за всіх, хто щодня живе у тривозі, не знаючи, яким буде наступний світанок.
Молімося за всіх, хто невтомною працею підтримує життя України, – за медиків, рятувальників, учителів, волонтерів, працівників критичної інфраструктури, православних капеланів і за всіх, хто, попри втрати, страх і втому, продовжує служити ближньому. Нехай Господь буде їхньою силою, їхнім захистом і їхньою надією.
Молімося за всіх українців, чиє життя сьогодні проходить далеко від рідної землі, але чиї серця, молитви, активна громадянська позиція та жертовна підтримка нерозривно пов’язані з Україною. Нехай Господь дає їм силу бути невтомним голосом підтримки України у світі.
Апостол Яків нагадує нам, що віра виявляється у справах. Тому сьогодні, коли війна знову розсіяла мільйони українців далеко від рідного дому, наша молитва покликана знаходити своє продовження у конкретному служінні та взаємній підтримці.
Парафії нашої Українська Православна Церква Канади мають залишатися місцями, де потребуючі можуть знайти підтримку і любов. Ми повинні пам’ятати, що шлях вимушеного переселення та адаптації до нового життя може бути тривалим і непростим. Тому наше служіння має бути сповнене християнського співчуття, терпеливості та уваги до кожної людини, з розумінням її особистої історії та потреб.
У цей святковий день ми, як Українська Православна Церква Канади, висловлюємо велику вдячність канадському уряду, який продовжує виявляти солідарність з Україною та її народом. Його підтримка є свідченням того, що у світі є ті, хто розуміє ціну свободи, людської гідності та права народу самому визначати своє майбутнє. Ми молимося за всіх, хто у різний спосіб допомагає Україні вистояти та захистити своє право на мирне і вільне життя.
У 35-ту річницю відновлення Незалежності України ми молитовно вітаємо усіх зі святом. Нехай слова Псалмоспівця – «Блаженний той, що на Господа покладає надію свою» (Пс. 39:5) – будуть і нашою молитвою та духовною настановою у цей час випробування.
Нехай Господь допоможе нам бути вірними у молитві, непохитними у добрі, милосердними до ближнього і мудрими у служінні. Нехай Він збереже Україну, укріпить її народ і приведе її до миру, свободи та відновлення.
