Behold, in the face of untimely death and tragedy, God sheds His incredible light, utterly destroying death's darkness and gloom. On Easter dawn, unapproachable light emits from the risen body of Christ and light defines the silhouette of an angel who announces, "He is not here. He has risen." The incarnate Christ breaks the bonds of death and provides the new dawn of faith---a faith that holds fast to the glory and the reality of the resurrection. Good Friday grief and despondency diminish in the presence of genuine Easter joy and exuberance.

In Christ’s substitutionary death on Good Friday, the wrath of God on account of our sins was forever turned away since it was poured out upon His innocent Son on the cross. As Isaiah says, “But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Just as Christ prayed to His Father from the cross that He would forgive His enemies, so also does our Lord pray for us in the presence of His Father: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

Lutheran Church–Canada mourns the death of Dr. Lynn R. Gergens (1959–2026), founding chair of the National Youth Gathering and a devoted servant of Christ’s Church.

From the first NYG in 1989 to decades of mentoring youth and countless others, Dr. Gergens’ influence was felt across Canada and beyond. We commend her to the Lord she faithfully served and pray for comfort for all who grieve.
