Are you interested in interfaith work?

Do you care about building relationships across religious and spiritual traditions, learning from our neighbours, celebrating diversity, and working together toward a more just and respectful Calgary?

The Calgary Interfaith Council is holding its first-ever COUNCIL Gathering on Monday, October 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Hillhurst United Church.

Awaken is invited to bring 3–5 people from our community to take part in the conversation, and we’d love to have some of you there.

You don’t need to be a theologian or an interfaith expert. Just curious, open-hearted, and interested in meeting people across traditions and imagining what we might do together.

This fall, Awaken Church will begin participating in Hearts Exchanged, a learning journey created by the The Canadian Reformed Churches in partnership with Indigenous leaders and communities.

Beginning October 4 at 4PM, and continuing on the first Sunday of each month for 8 months, we will gather to listen, learn, reflect, and grow as we seek to become better treaty people and more faithful neighbours. This sacred learning will take the place of our usual Sunday Worship format.

Hearts Exchanged is not a program about guilt, nor is it a course designed to provide easy answers. It is an invitation to truth-telling. Together we will explore the history and ongoing realities of Indigenous peoples in Canada, the legacy of residential schools and colonization, the meaning of treaty relationships, and the responsibilities we share in the work of reconciliation.

In following the Jesus Way, we believe that reconciliation is more than an idea. It is a practice. It calls us to listen deeply, to confront difficult truths with humility, and to imagine new ways of living together rooted in justice, respect, and right relationship.

We are grateful to begin this journey together. We know that reconciliation is not a destination we arrive at, but a relationship we nurture.

All are welcome to join us as we learn, pray, and walk this path together.

Are you excited for summer? We're excited about this summer at Awaken.

Beginning this Sunday, we'll be launching a 12-week sermon series called 12 Practices for Spiritual Renewal. By "spiritual renewal," we mean the kinds of practices that help free us, heal us, and reconnect us with God, ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

For the rest of June, worship will continue as usual, and you're welcome to join us either in person or online.

Then, starting in July, we'll slow things down a little.

We'll still gather Sundays at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary, but we'll move into a more contemplative rhythm and remain relatively unplugged. We'll sit in the round with the communion table at the centre. Together we'll practice lectio divina, share some Quaker-inspired silence, break bread, pray, sing a little, and hear the week's reflection. The sermon will still be available afterward through the podcast for those who can't join us in person.

After worship, we'll spend some time together in the garden with coffee, tea, and conversation.

If you're hoping for a little more time outdoors this summer, stay tuned. We're also planning a few prayer walks on Nose Hill and maybe even a couple of community BBQs.

And for those who'll be camping, travelling, biking, visiting family, enjoying afternoon siestas, wandering mountain trails, or simply taking a well-earned rest, go with our blessing. May you find beauty, joy, adventure, and deep renewal wherever the summer takes you. We look forward to hearing the stories when you return and sharing together the wonders God has shown you along the way.

It feels like a good season to slow down, pay attention, and make room for renewal. We'd love to have you join us.
