Using humour, story, and an invitation to question, we journey to discover the message the Spirit has for us, both individually and as a community. J

This week John spoke about what it means not just to go to church, but to be the church.

Reflecting on the story of Jesus calming the storm, he invited us to think about how faith is lived out in everyday moments through compassion, courage, justice, kindness, and showing up for one another. Church isn’t only something that happens on Sunday morning. It happens in conversations, in acts of care, in standing with others, and in how we move through the world.

John also shared stories of what “being the church” looked like throughout the week: people supporting one another, communities gathering, justice work, prayer, service, and simple acts of humanity that make a difference.

When life feels stormy, he left us with three simple invitations: Pray. Play. Participate.

How can you be the church this week?

What a wonderful service at Hillhurst United Church this week.

The theme of storms felt especially fitting as the morning shifted from sunshine to rain and back to sunshine again on Sunday. We had the privilege of celebrating the baptism of baby Hana, a joyful moment for our community. In the sermon, John shared what a week of being the church looks like for him at Hillhurst and why we should all strive to be the church in our day-to-day lives.

We are grateful to the band for sharing such beautiful music and to everyone who joined us in person, online, or throughout the week in spirit and support.

This week, Rev. John Pentland has a Letter to the Editor that speaks to an important conversation happening in our communities and across our province.

In his letter, John reflects on concerns around the use of Christianity to support division, exclusion, and Christian nationalism, and calls us back to values rooted in the gospel: love of neighbour, compassion for those on the margins, and care for those who are hurting.

His message raises questions about what faith looks like in practice and challenges us to consider how we live out values of inclusion, justice, and care for one another.

Take a moment to read John’s words and reflect on the conversation they invite.

Have you ever helped with building maintenance, repairs, gardening, renovations, cleaning, or general care of our church home?

The Building and Maintenance Committee would love to invite you into an important conversation as we gather the stories, wisdom, and ideas of those who have helped care for our building over the years.

This is a chance to reflect together on the work that has been done to date, share experiences, and help shape thoughtful next steps as we look at the future needs of our church home.

Whether you’ve been deeply involved or helped out from time to time, your perspective matters and would be greatly valued.

Join us for this gathering and be part of the conversation as we care for the place we all share.

Thank you to the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good for launching the referendum campaign today and for bringing together organizers, supporters, and community members committed to the common good.

A special thank you as well to everyone from the Hillhurst community who came out to take part, show support, and stand alongside others in this important work. It was encouraging to see so many people gathering, connecting, and engaging together.

As the campaign moves forward, the focus remains on encouraging people to vote for Canada, vote down the nine unconstitutional questions, and support the common good.

Tonight at the Gathering, June 3 at 6:00 p.m. at Living Spirit Centre, 629 49 Ave SW, the June theme begins with The Call to Wake Up. Alan Frank and Christy Guenther open the month’s reflections by exploring what awakening might mean in personal life and in the wider world. This is the first of four conversations through June, each offering a different perspective on what it means to live more awake and aware.

The evening weaves together music, prayer, and reflection, followed by a simple shared meal and time of conversation together. Music begins around 6:00 p.m., with worship starting at 6:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come, listen, and share in the evening.
