Calgary Buddhist Temple

Calgary Buddhist Temple The Calgary Buddhist (Jodo Shinshu) Temple is a Mahayana Buddhist Temple who are followers of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Pure Land Buddhism.

(see Additional information section for more details) Established in 1951, the temple has been it’s current location in Bridgeland since 1981. We are a part of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada (JSBTC). The JSBTC is affiliated with the Nishi Hongwanji of Kyoto, Japan, the mother temple of the Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) sect of Buddhism. The sect follows the teachings of Shinran Shonin

(1173 – 1262). It is a teaching wherein we are endowed with the ultimate goal of Enlightenment symbolized as the Pure Land. Also know as Shin Buddhism.

Work has started on the outside of the Temple, as soil is pulled away from the east side of the building and the concrete planters are removed from beside the front entrance.

The attached photos show the contractor hard at work, digging up the soil, pulling out the landscaping fabric, and then transporting the soil by wheelbarrow to a truck parked in the parking lot across the street.

The nanking cherry bushes along the fence line had to be removed for this work to be carried out.

The concrete planters have been removed from the front of the Temple; you can see the drainage system that was in place and which will be extended to move water further away from the wall.

Unfortunately, the City still has the entire sidewalk and street in front of the Temple torn up, so we could not access the front of the building to take better photos of this work.

See our earlier post to learn how you can help us get this work done.

As many of you know, we are continuing to raise funds for our Remediation Fund so the Temple can be ready for Sangha events and activities.

We are incredibly grateful that a longtime Sangha member has offered to match donations to the Remediation Fund up to $25,000.

In other words, a $500 donation becomes $1,000 to the Temple.

If you wish to donate, you can do so by

➡Clicking on the “Donate” button on the website
➡ Sending money by e-transfer to [email protected] marked “Remediation Fund”,
➡ Going to Canada Helps at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/39361
➡ Cash or cheque at Temple services
➡ Mail to Calgary Buddhist Temple, 207 – 6 St NE, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 3Y1

Please include your mailing address so that we can provide you with a tax receipt.

If we raise more money than needed for the repairs, the Board plans to invest that money into an Endowment Fund to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Calgary Buddhist Temple.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

September is Japanese Heritage Month and as such, the Calgary Buddhist Temple Sangha Engagement is proud to hold a movie matinee at the Temple.

Set in Tokyo, RENTAL FAMILY follows an American actor (Brendan Fraser), who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese "rental family" agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers.

As he immerses himself in his clients' worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality.

Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.

We have the best Sangha.

Check out our super group of eager volunteers were at the Donation Centre working hard, sorting bags and bags of donated items.

This is a crucial step to helping low-income individuals and getting things where they need to go.

Thank you for supporting the community!
