THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION
“Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?” Matthew 18:33 (NLT)

Let’s pretend you owed someone millions of dollars and had absolutely no way to pay it back. What if that person told you, “I’ve decided to forgive your debt. Your slate is clean with me”? Imagine the excitement and incredible relief you’d feel, knowing you’d been forgiven for a debt you could never repay. Yet, while we enjoy being forgiven by God, often many of us don’t extend the same forgiveness to others.

We can be like the servant Jesus talked about in Matthew chapter 18, who begged his king for patience to repay a debt. The king, filled with compassion and pity, chose to forgive his servant’s massive debt. But what did the forgiven servant do next? He went to a fellow servant who owed him a relatively puny amount and demanded instant payment. And when his fellow servant begged for patience and mercy, the first servant had him thrown in jail! When the king heard about the forgiven servant’s actions, he called the servant evil and had him thrown in prison too.

Now, this was Jesus’ teaching under the old covenant. Don’t misunderstand this parable and think we serve an unloving, unforgiving God. We live under the new covenant, and as believers in Christ, we are fully forgiven.

So, why did the king call his servant evil? Because the servant didn’t choose to forgive. As believers, we are to forgive because our King has already forgiven us. Have you been withholding forgiveness from someone? Reflect on God’s incredible forgiveness toward you… and then choose to extend the same forgiveness to them.

FORGIVE TO BE FORGIVEN?
“Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him [drop the issue, let it go], so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions and wrongdoings [against Him and others]. Mark 11:25 (AMP)

Have you ever been told, “If you don’t forgive, God won’t forgive you”? That teaching has caused many people to struggle with whether or not they’re forgiven or even saved. But context is so crucial in understanding the good news of the Gospel.

The old covenant in place before Jesus’s death and resurrection was one of law and works. The Israelites had to forgive others to receive forgiveness and sacrifice burnt offerings to be temporarily in right-standing with God.

In today’s verse, Jesus was teaching His disciples old covenant ways because that was the covenant they were still living under. Everything changed once Jesus died on the cross and rose again. As the final sacrifice for our sins, He established a new covenant and became the bridge for us to be made right with God (Romans 5:1, 1 Timothy 2:5).

God no longer requires our perfect obedience or animal sacrifices to receive His forgiveness and enjoy permanent right-standing with Him. It means He’s not pardoning you one minute and then holding your sins against you the next. If your faith is in Christ and His finished work on the cross, God has forgiven all your sins—period.

This doesn’t give you a license to hold grudges—that will only poison your own heart. Under the new covenant, we don’t forgive to receive forgiveness. We forgive because we’re forgiven. What fantastic news the Gospel is for us!

NEED HELP FORGIVING?
“This is the reason I urge you to boldly believe for whatever you ask for in prayer—be convinced that you have received it and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 (TPT)

Forgiveness and faith go hand-in-hand. In fact, your faith won’t work properly without forgiveness.

For example, we need faith to experience God’s forgiveness and grow in our relationship with Him. Now, when I say “experience God’s forgiveness,” I don’t mean that God’s forgiveness of our sins hinges on our ability to forgive others; that’s old covenant doctrine. I’m saying it takes faith in what Jesus did for us to enjoy His forgiveness and walk in that amazing freedom.

It also takes faith to believe we’ve received something we haven’t felt or experienced yet. Often, we stand in faith on today’s verse when it comes to getting a particular job or physical healing, but did you know it also applies to forgiveness? It’s an act of faith to believe you can forgive someone who has wronged you.

Now, I know how hard it is to move past what someone has done to you and say, “I forgive you.” But for believers, forgiveness is not an option; it’s a must. However, it isn’t to excuse someone else’s behaviour or “let them off the hook.” It’s for our benefit so that nothing keeps us from moving forward in our relationship with God and every other area of our life.

If you struggle with past offences done to you, don’t worry; God doesn’t leave you trying to forgive in your own strength. Ask Him to help you let it go. Even if you don’t know how it’s possible, stand in faith that it is. After all, everything is possible with God—including forgiving someone else.

YOU’VE GOT ENOUGH
“Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.” The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.”
Luke 17:4–5 (NLT)

Do you struggle to forgive because you think you first need more faith? Jesus’ disciples thought the same. Imagine their faces when Peter asked Jesus, “How often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” and Jesus replied, “Not seven times, but seventy times seven!” (See Matthew 18:21–22, NLT.) Seventy times seven equals 490. I’m sure the disciples almost fell over at this number. Forgive someone nearly five hundred times? Seems impossible, right? No wonder they thought they needed more faith!

As a quick side note, if you have to forgive the same person in your life 490 times a day, you might need to put some boundaries on that relationship.

I love Jesus’ response to the disciples, though. He didn’t say, “Yes, you’re going to need a truckload of faith to forgive people.” He said, “You don’t need more faith. There is no ‘more’ or ‘less’ in faith. If you have a bare kernel of faith, say the size of a poppy seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, ‘Go jump in the lake,’ and it would do it” (Luke 17:6, MSG).

Forgiveness can be hard, but doing it without faith would be impossible. However, your ability to forgive someone isn’t dependent on how much faith you have; you have all the faith you need. As Jesus pointed out, even a microscopic bit of faith put to work can achieve what seems impossible. What matters is your willingness to step out in faith and do it. Is there someone you need to forgive today?

EYES FORWARD!
Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13–14 (ESV)

What would happen if you got into your car and tried to drive forward while looking out the rear window? You wouldn’t get very far, and you’d be super frustrated! The same thing happens to people who hang onto past mistakes they’ve made or wrongs other people have committed against them. They go through life looking at what’s behind them, frustrated, angry, and unable to move forward. The truth is, you can’t press on toward what’s ahead if you’re constantly focused on what’s behind you.

If there’s one person who knew this from experience, it was the Apostle Paul. Paul—initially known as Saul—was a zealous Pharisee. He originally played a massive role in hunting down and viciously persecuting Jesus’ followers because he viewed them as a threat to Judaism.

However, Acts 9:1–6 tells us that while Saul was on the road to Damascus to arrest and persecute more believers, Jesus stepped into his life. As a bright light suddenly blinded Saul, Jesus asked him, “Why are you persecuting me?” That interaction began Saul’s incredible transformation into the Apostle Paul. He changed from being a feared oppressor of Christians into a passionate believer who was used by God to spread the Gospel throughout the ancient world.

I love how this story shows the forgiveness God extended toward Saul. Rather than leaving him stuck in shame and condemnation over his past, it helped Saul-turned-Paul face the future, free and forgiven. Is it time you faced your future the same way?

ALREADY YOURS
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17 (NKJV)

Some believers are held back by the lie that they have to pray a miracle down from the heavens or wait for God to drop it in their lap. But the truth is, the miracle is already yours.

In the Gospels, people had to physically go find Jesus to receive a miracle. But as a new covenant believer, Holy Spirit dwells in you (Romans 8:11), and you have access to His supernatural power.

But we have a part to play: taking control of our thoughts and renewing our heart beliefs in the Word. If you’re dealing with sickness, you can tell your body to conform to God’s Word. If you struggle with anxious thoughts, speak Scripture out loud and begin to praise God.

God’s presence in you means there’s no room for fear. You have the power to resist the devil, resist fear, and choose to believe in Jesus!

And when the miraculous happens, don’t be surprised! Now, we should always be in awe of our Saviour and what He does in and through us. But He’s your Father and you’re His child. Through the lens of that loving relationship, we should come to expect to experience His goodness and blessings. When you look at the joy, healing, and breakthrough He brings, you should be able to nod and say, “Yep, that’s my Dad. That’s just who He is and what He does!”

As His son or daughter, everything is already yours (2 Peter 1:3). Will you believe it?
