St. Mary's Cathedral Calgary Catholic Women's League

St. Mary's Cathedral Calgary Catholic Women's League We are a fellowship of women of all backgrounds, from 16 to over 90 years young, wishing to serve God and Canada, seeking faith, fun and fulfillment together.

The Catholic Women’s League of Canada (CWL Canada) is a national organization rooted in gospel values calling its members to holiness through service to the people of God. CWL Canada began in Edmonton, AB in 1912 to provide protection and support to women and girls, especially immigrants seeking work in the city. Soon, councils were formed in the major cities of Montreal (1917), Toronto (1918) and

Halifax (1919). The first conference was held in Montreal, and on June 17, 1920 CWL Canada was founded and placed under the patronage of the Canadian hierarchy.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of the Most Reverend Frederick Bernard Henry, the Seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Calgary. He passed away peacefully at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at the Rockyview General Hospital. He was 81 years of age.

We entrust Bishop Henry to the Merciful Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and implore the clergy and faithful of our diocese to pray for the repose of his soul.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

Requiescat in pace.

Pope Francis’ message for Lent urges “To pause in prayer, in order to receive the word of God, to pause like the Samaritan in the presence of a wounded brother or sister. Love of God and love of neighbour are one love. …For this reason, prayer, almsgiving and fasting are not three unrelated acts, but a single movement of openness and self-emptying, in which we cast out the idols that weigh us down, the attachments that imprison us. Then the atrophied and isolated heart will revive.”

Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s day call us to love! We can begin by praying “A Lenten Prayer”.

May the Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast is celebrated on October 4th, be an inspiration as Canadians mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th.

May the splendour of autumn lead you to praise and thanksgiving as you continue your faith journey and to be Catholic and Living It!
