Emancipation Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday in August (even though Emancipation Day in Canada is August 1). This Sunday commemorates the day in 1834 when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect for most British colonies, freeing enslaved children under the age of six.

Emancipation Day takes place yearly on 1 August. It marks the day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire. On 1 August 1834, over 800,000 enslaved people of African descent were freed in many parts of the Caribbean, South America and Canada. Black communities in Canada have celebrated Emancipation Day since the 1850s. In March 2021, the Canadian House of Commons officially designated Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is a time to reflect, educate and celebrate the strength, fortitude and determination of Black communities across Canada.
