Dear parishioners and friends of St. Francis de Sales, Burnaby,

As September begins, we feel the rhythm of a new season... Students return to classrooms, families settle into fresh routines, and all of us are invited to embrace new opportunities for growth. Our readings for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time remind us that discipleship is never a solitary journey. We belong to one another in Christ, learning together how to live the Gospel with faith, hope and a deep loving care for our neighbours.

Friends, this week, we are pleased to introduce our refreshed parish bulletin format. Inspired by our parish vision of being gathered as family, rooted in worship, and sent on mission... the new look is designed to make parish news, worship opportunities, ministry highlights, and important announcements more accessible and engaging for everyone. We are also delighted to share the wonderful success of our Spring Baby Bottle Campaign. Together, our SFDS parish community raised $8,106.32 to support women and babies in need through this important life-affirming ministry. Dear parishioners and friends of St. Francis de Sales, Burnaby,

This is the day at the tail end of August that The Lord Has Made ! .... And as we prepare for a new school year and settle back into familiar routines, this Sunday’s Gospel invites us to reconsider something we would often rather avoid: The Cross.

When Jesus reveals that His mission leads through suffering, Peter objects. ... He can see who Jesus is, but he cannot yet see the beauty of what Jesus has come to do. Today, we reflect on the remarkable journey of St. Peter, from the disciple who resisted the cross to the apostle who would eventually embrace it with humility and faith.

Peter ultimately discovered that life is not primarily about comfort or self-preservation, but about loving generously, even when that love costs us something. The same invitation stands before us today. Whether it is a difficult relationship, a family challenge, first-day school anxieties, or the ordinary sacrifices hidden within daily life... these crosses are not punishments but opportunities to walk more closely with Christ.

As Pope Leo reminded the faithful just a few hours ago over in Italy: “Never cease our dialogue with the Lord. Instead, we are confidently to tell him our difficulty in understanding what he is asking of us.” Together with Jesus, may we learn, like Peter, to trust that the path of sacrificial love is also the path to deeper life.

This Sunday, Jesus renames Simon "Peter" — Rock — not because Peter earned his own stability, but because he stayed close to the One who is truly unshakable. And just as Peter's stability comes for a divine source outside of himself.... our strength, friends, as a parish family isn't something we manufacture; it's something we receive by staying anchored to Christ.

One of the most beautiful ways our parish lives out that anchoring is through the Good Shepherd Ministry, which brings hope and dignity to our hungry and homeless neighbours on the streets of Vancouver. Led with tireless love by our own parishioner Linda Noel and her team, this ministry is a living picture of what it means to build on the Rock together — not alone, but as a Church reaching outward in mission.

Register with your spouse before it's too late! ... Brothers and sisters, we're thrill to announce the launching of our 4th Alpha Marriage Course, geared to strengthening your relationship to your wife or husband. Stronger marriages make for stronger families and an even more vibrant parish!

Our SFDS Marriage Alpha is starting on Oct. 1 and it's a hybrid course (3 classes in-person and 4 online. For the in-person night we will have childcare available. We've been told by couples that this makes a great DATE NIGHT venue coming here for Marriage Alpha.

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Francis de Sales, Burnaby,

If persistence were a Summer Olympic sport, the Canaanite woman in Sunday's Gospel would be standing on the podium with a gold medal around her neck and not too far away from her very relieved daughter.

In the Gospel of Matthew we hear this woman plead with Jesus to heal her tormented child. Met first with silence and then what seems like a discouraging response, she refuses to give up.

Instead, she presses on in faith: "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Jesus is delighted. "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish."
She doesn't ask once and quietly accept defeat. She persists. She trusts that Jesus is listening, even when it doesn't seem that way.
Earlier today, Pope Leo XIV, reflecting on this Gospel, notes that faith means we "listen attentively by opening our eyes and hearts to what God wants to tell us," even when God seems to be leading us somewhere unexpected.

Friends... let's keep asking and trusting and showing up... exercising our faith boldly and counting the blessings along the way... together with Jesus.

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Francis de Sales, Burnaby,

I hope you're all having a blessed weekend. This Sunday's Gospel finds the disciples alone in a boat, battered by wind and waves, while Jesus prays on the mountain. When he finally comes to them — walking on the water — of all things... they're terrified. But, He's not a ghost. He's the Lord. "Take heart... do not be afraid," says Jesus.

Peter, ever the risk-taker, asks to come to him across the water. For a few steps, it works. Then Peter gets distracted by the wind and loses his focus on Our Lord... down Peter goes. But Jesus reaches out immediately after Peter cries out... no delay.

Reflecting on this same Gospel just this morning, Pope Leo reminds us that "whatever the circumstances, Jesus does not abandon us." That's the heart of it, isn't it? ... Not that the storms disappear, but that we're never facing them alone.

So wherever your own "wind and waves" show up this week — at home, at work, wherever Our Lord takes you — take heart... Keep your eyes on Him. And if any of us feel like we're sinking, cry out... Jesus is already reaching for you.

Let us continue to pray for all our brothers and sisters in our province whose lives have been turned upside-down by the raging wildfires. And let us include in our prayers all the frontline firefighters throughout B.C.'s interior.
