Got the winter cover crop planted. Pretty late-oops! But we’ll have some nice sprouts and nitrogen to dig into the soil in spring.

We are leaving the kale to be munched on through winter and we left the chard roots in to hopefully provide some early spring greens.

Over winter I’d like to look at replacing our lawn bald spots with drought resistant and lower maintenance options.

We highly recommend replacing lawns altogether with more sustainable options like water-conscious xeriscaping or planting for wildlife. Or build some raised beds to grow food in these spaces. For homeowners who can't part with their green space, some of the products on this page are proving to be ex...

This is borage. It is a returning volunteer near the west end of the peas. The flowers are beautiful and change from pink:purple:blue as they mature. They are edible and taste like cucumber.

The current watering system is set up to automatically water the veggies at 100% and the ‘wall flowers’ (bed along parking lot and back of building) at 25% for 60 min a day at sunrise. The faucet is set open the whole way.

In process:
Labrynthe hoses are placed (thanks Ellen!) and needs one spot repair with plumber tape. It’s labelled ‘needs plumber tape’ and is at the north point.

The two spray hoses are by the trees along Teal St and all the places which have duct tape need replacing with plumber tape. (My son and I spent a good effort with duct tape, but to no avail).

Placement plan:
Once repaired, the spray hoses, which spray a wide area and perform better when laying flat) will go in the landscaped area and the drip hoses will circle the three tree clusters along Teal St with regular hoses connecting them.

The tree clusters and labrynthe will be connected together.

There is a supply hose which can be manually connected to either the landscaped area or tree/labrynthe area for manual watering. These should be done once a week and a deep water. Such as max power for at least an hour.

This was discovered cowering by the compost box. Does it belong to someone? I heard AL Fike was looking for a hoe that had gone astray.

Thanks Ellen for all her work!
The magnolia tree got a good drink today. 2 rows of carrots planted, spinach planted and bush beans planted.

Planning on re-seeding calendula around the perimeter as per Al Fike's recommendation and also planting all those onions!

NOW IN BLOOM:
Pacific Bleeding Heart (Dicentra formosa ssp. formosa)
• This perennial is native to the Pacific Northwest
• It remains in flower all through the spring and summer versus cultivated varieties
• Fleshy textured, deeply cut leaves are as delicate like lace, and shaped like a heart pendant
• Blooms at Burnaby Lake have been seen from the palest pink to magenta and deep purple flowers
• You can find Pacific Bleeding Heart in shady, moist areas and makes an excellent understory plant
• Fun fact: before flowering, the green tops look very similar to carrot plants🥕🐇
