"But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."
1 THESSALONIANS 5:8

The breastplate protects our heart and lungs, ensuring that our lifebreath continues. Faith and love, our trust in God, and passion for people do the same for our spiritual life.

"Therefore, my dear friends . . . continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose." Phillipians 2:12-13

What a fabulous contrast! You try your hardest in awe of God whose perfection you cannot meet, and then you realize that this same God is working His miracles in you. Find comfort in the presence of God in you.

". . . that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Phillipians 2:10-11

When the one you follow is great and good, then bowing before Him with all others is a great honour. Today for your prayer, go on your knees and repeatedly pray, "Jesus, you are my Lord."

04/10/2013

"And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death... even death on a cross!" Phillipians 2:8

Jesus put obedience above life itself. He was willing to lose His life in a painful, humiliating way. Give thanks for His humility and ask Him to give you some of the same.

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness."
Phillipians 2:5-7

It always comes back to what Jesus did for us. He was and is the greatest, He is God, and He came and served us to the point of death. If you want to know Jesus, practice serving others.

04/08/2013

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." Philllipians 2:3-4
This challenge goes counter to most messages we hear today. Our world says, "it is all about you." Jesus calls us to put others first. Think of a way to put another person first today... and do it.

"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose." Philippians 2:1-2

Do you feel a sense of unity with other Christians? Are you at peace with your community? To get there, reflect on Jesus' love for you... be humbled by how He suffered for you.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18

It is one thing to be dressed for the occasion, but what really counts is knowing Who the commander is. Jesus guides us by the Spirit as we pray. Let Him lead by listening in prayer.

"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Ephesians 6:16-17

The shield described here is a big water-soaked board that absorbs fiery arrows. Temptations are absorbed and extinguished by trusting God. Then we can go on the offensive, speaking with the sword which is the Word of God.

"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." Ephesians 6:14-15
Notice that each of these pieces of armour are a gift from God to protect you. Ask Jesus to give you His truth, righteousness and peace. Picture Him putting his armour on you.

04/03/2013

"Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."
EPHESIANS 6:13

The word "stand" is repeated. It is not run or move or go, but stand. The idea is that Jesus Christ has already won the victory. We simply stand with Him in spiritual triumph.

04/01/2013

". . . be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."
EPHESIANS 6:10-11

A life of following Jesus is a battle. Jesus promised it would be challenging. He also showed us how to prepare. Take the time to prepare your heart and mind.
