In the Parable of the Good Shepherd, Jesus says his sheep know his voice and follow him. But what does it mean to hear the voice of Jesus today?

In this message, we explore how Jesus speaks through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and the community of believers. We also consider why hearing him requires more than simply reading the Bible or listening to sermons. It requires a heart that is willing to receive, trust, and follow him.

As we learn to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd, we discover that his call leads us into the abundant life he promises.

Israel’s story gives us a sobering picture of what happens when God’s people continually push God away. In the final days of Elijah’s ministry, King Ahaziah’s unfaithfulness is contrasted with Elisha’s faithfulness—and the two paths lead in very different directions.

In this message, we look at what Israel’s story teaches followers of Jesus today: rejecting the way of Jesus moves us away from the life of God, but as we faithfully follow Jesus, we can trust that God is present with us.

Elijah was one of Israel’s greatest prophets, yet even he could not bear the weight of God’s work to bring Israel back to Himself. At Mount Horeb, Elijah encounters God in the mysterious “sound of sheer silence”—a silence that brings him to the limits of his understanding. He cannot move beyond it.

Elijah’s limitations point us toward Jesus. What Elijah could not carry, Jesus carries. Where Elijah could not go, Jesus can take us. And the same is true for us. We will inevitably reach the limits of our strength, our understanding, and even our ideas about God. But those limits don't have to be the end of our journey. As we continue to meet God in the silence, Jesus can lead us beyond what we can comprehend on our own and into an ever-deeper communion with God.

In 1 Kings 17, Elijah announces to unfaithful Israel there will be no rain, showing the real consequences of covenant unfaithfulness. And during this time He protects Elijah.

We can connect Israel’s story to our lives: when we replace God with “false gods” (like your job, your comfort, a relationship), we begin to experience “life without God” in those areas. This shows up in the form of stress, fear, and emptiness—not because God is cruel, but because these can’t deliver what we're looking for. Still, God’s grace keeps pursuing us: He provides help to draw us back to life with Him.

The heart of this week's message is faithfulness. God rescued Israel from Egypt and entered a covenant like a deep relational vow—calling them to love Him wholly and to have no other gods. But, as we read, under the kings of Israel the nation eventually breaks their covenant and does just that.

There's a parallel for Christ-followers today. We live under the “new covenant” established through Jesus’, and faithfulness looks like discipleship—loving Jesus by obeying and following His way. And idolatry can still happen, but more subtly: anything we depend on with our “whole heart, mind, soul, and strength” can function like a god. The good news is that in the new covenant, God meets repentance with forgiveness and help, calling us back from false gods to true devotion.
