𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐍'𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐃𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐆𝐄
𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄….
𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟕, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Over the past month I have had several people tell me I look just like somebody they know. It first happened while I was standing in line at Tim Hortons waiting for my usual large double-double. A father and son were standing in line, and I could see this man kept looking back at me. After he placed his order, he turned to me and said, “𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐨𝐧?” I do not follow English Premier Soccer closely but I have heard his name before and knew he managed Manchester United for a period of time. After I shared my limited knowledge of Alex Ferguson with this man, he replied, “𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐦!” When I got home the first thing I did was Google searched Alex Ferguson and looked at pictures of him. Some of the pictures that appeared of Alex are of him now in his 80’s. I did not see the resemblance personally, but I sure hope if I do look like him, I share more of a likeness to his pictures when he was in his 60’s and not in his 80’s.

About a week later I was at the Service Canada location in Brantford to renew my daughter’s passport for her. While I was waiting for my turn, I started up a conversation with a woman who was there for the same purpose. After asking her if she was planning a trip soon, she asked, “Is your last name by chance Bradford? You look just like somebody I know from that family.”.” I told her I was not familiar with anybody from that family but did share with her how somebody recently thought I looked like Alex Ferguson. Then last Thursday while I was shopping at No Frills, I happened to be in the bread section when a man looked at me and said, “Hi Ted!” When I told him my name was actually Dean, he replied, “You look exactly like a Ted that I know.”

As I reflected upon these 3 instances it reminded me of some of the other times over the years when people have said that I look so much like somebody they know. Quite a few years ago I was told by somebody that there is a waiter working in Montreal that could be my identical twin. When I coached basketball, I had one of the parents tell me I looked exactly like one of the characters on the tv show Ted Lasso. I can never recall anyone ever telling me I look like Robert Redford however.

I imagine we have all had similar experiences when somebody has told us we look so much like someone they know. We will often have a resemblance in appearance to one of our parents or other family members, but as believers somebody else we should also begin to look to others is Jesus. We do not have to wear sandals, nor grow a beard, nor wear our hair longer in order to look like Jesus to others. People should be able to see this in how we are living our lives as a result of Christ’s Spirit living within us. Paul reminded believers of this when he wrote: 𝑺𝒐, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒔. 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒅, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝑮𝒐𝒅’𝒔 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑯𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒔 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏. 𝑵𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑯𝒊𝒎, “𝑨𝒃𝒃𝒂, 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓.” 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒋𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒎 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒅’𝒔 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏. (𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒔 8:15-16)

One of the privileges we experience when we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior is we are adopted into God’s family. We are also given the gift of the Holy Spirit joining our spirit to help us become more Christ-like in appearance in the ways in which we live. One of the ways the Holy Spirit helps us to appear and look more like Jesus is by developing these fruits of the spirit within us: 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔: 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆, 𝒋𝒐𝒚, 𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆, 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍. (𝑮𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒔 5:22-23)

The character traits listed by Paul here are the very ones that we see displayed in how Jesus lived His life. By truly knowing Jesus, we can begin to imitate Him by having these same character traits on display in our lives. Now that Paul has reminded us of how we should begin to look like Christ and imitate Him in these ways, which of these traits do we see in ourselves, and hopefully others do as well? If we are not yet showing some of these same character traits that Jesus Himself displayed the problem might be as Paul suggests in verse 25 that we are not following the Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let’s make sure we are allowing and letting the Holy Spirit produce all of these character traits within us. Wouldn’t it be nice to have somebody come up to us one day and say,“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.” People seem to think I look a lot like somebody they know. Let’s all strive as believers to help people see we are looking more Christ-like.

𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐍'𝐒 𝐌𝐈𝐃𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐆𝐄
"𝐈 𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐒, 𝐁𝐔𝐓……."
𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Last week I had to do an on-line quiz consisting of 23 questions. In order to pass this test, I had to get 18 out of the 23 answers right, or achieve a grade of 78%. I was pretty good back in Divinity College when it came to taking quizzes. My average back then taking quizzes was usually in the high 80’s or low 90’s, but 25 years have passed since then. I have not taken too many quizzes since then so I knew getting at least 78% on this quiz could be a challenge. Thankfully before taking the quiz, there was a website provided that I could read about some of the information that might be asked on it. I studied hard and prayed equally as much before taking the test. On Thursday morning I clicked onto the quiz and began answering the 23 questions that appeared. Each question provided multiple choices and I had to click on what I believed was the correct response. Some of the questions that appeared I knew the answer to immediately. I breathed a sigh of relief whenever these questions appeared. Some of these multiple-choice questions were very difficult to answer because more than one option seemed to me could be the right response. I thought hard before clicking on these responses but afterward I would second guess if I made the right choice or not. By question 15 I was beginning to wonder if I had already failed by answering too many wrong. I wished at that moment they had an on-going tally on the side of this quiz telling me my current score. At least if I had already failed, I would not have to keep going on. It was a tense 15-20 minutes completing all 23 questions. When I completed the final question on the quiz a message appeared saying, “𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬.!” I took a deep breath and waited for my score. Shortly after this, the screen changed and my score appeared. I got 20 out of the 23 correct, or 87% percent on this test. Yes, it had been many years since I last took a test, but I am still maintaining my former average even 25 years later. I was so excited I had to tell somebody. I sent a text message to my daughter at university telling her she will be so proud to know her dad can still score 87% on his tests. She messaged right back and said, “𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤!”I have not received a compliment like that before but I took it. Naturally I had to reply back to her saying, “𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.” After that comment I had to reward myself with getting my second large double-double for the day.

It felt good to realize I knew most of the answers to the questions on that quiz. On the other hand, I realize there were 3 questions that I did not have the right answer for. In this instance I am okay that I did not know the answers to certain questions. There are times in our lives however when we do want to know the answers to the questions we might have. This is often the case when our lives begin to unfold in ways we did not expect or plan.

This was the case for John the Baptist. He very much felt fulfilled living out his calling preparing the way for the Lord by preaching in the wilderness, by calling people to repent, and by baptizing those who did in the Jordan. Circumstances changed for John the Baptist when he was arrested and put in prison by Herod. While he was in prison, John the Baptist began having doubts about Jesus and whether He was truly the Messiah. John the Baptist needed answers to his questions about Jesus in this difficult moment in his life, so he sent his disciples to ask this question on his behalf. Jesus was not offended by John’s questions and provided an assuring answer for him:
𝐆𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧-𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐦, ‘𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞.’”

Our Lord welcomes our questions that we seek an answer to as we see very clearly in this passage. 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑱𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒘𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒖𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔.

When we do this, Jesus can provide us with the answers we need in that moment that will provide us with assurance. There will be times however when He may not provide us with an immediate answer to our questions. We need to understand in these moments that it is not because Jesus does not know the answer but rather the timing may not be right for us to hear His response. When this may be the case in our lives, let us make sure that we do not make the choice to doubt our Lord in these moments, but rather keep living our lives in a way still trusting Him with our unanswered questions in life.

I am glad that I was successful with last week’s test. This week a new test begins for me being a Leaf’s fan. The quiz has just two questions. First, how many times will I jump on and off the bandwagon this year and second, will this be the year I finally celebrate my team winning the Stanley Cup. I do not know the answer to either yet, but if the answer to the first is 87 times like my score on last week’s test, I would not be surprised.

"𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠"
𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

It is “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝” this Friday through Sunday at Western University in London. “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝” is known to be one of the biggest weekends in London each year. The highlight of “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝” is the football game on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Stadium. Current students and alumni come out in droves for this highlight event. Last year my daughter was in attendance. She did not enjoy the football game but did like trying some of the free food offered at the food trucks outside the stadium. Besides the football game, returning alumni can attend reunion events hosted by the faculty departments from which they graduated, as well as partake in campus tours, and other ceremonies planned throughout the weekend. Perhaps the biggest attended events during “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝” are the outdoor street parties that happen around the university. The London Free Press reported that last year over 18,000 students made their way on Saturday afternoon and evening to one of the streets that hosts these street parties. Police put up barricades to restrict traffic in this area, and paramedics are on scene in case there are any incidents. It is not just Western students who make their way to be part of these street parties. Students from other universities will also travel to London on this weekend to enjoy some of the partying associated with this event. Many of the restaurants in London are quite happy when “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 weekend comes around. We took our daughter out to a restaurant on Sunday night for dinner, and the waitress there said they are bringing on additional staff and servers knowing how busy it will be on “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠" weekend. London will be a very busy place this weekend due to “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠".

I graduated from Brock University in 1987 (yes, I am that old), and from Knox College in 2001 (yes, I have been in ministry that long). In all my years I have not returned for a “Homecoming" at either of these institutions. I considered it this past May when it came to celebrating my 25th anniversary reunion graduating from Knox College but previous commitments conflicted with me going. Perhaps some of you who read these messages on a regular basis have attended “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠"events such as a high school reunion or at the college or university where you attended. When it comes to church, we usually see “homecomings” happen when a past attender returns for an anniversary service or shows up for a Sunday service when they are back in the area for a visit. Another “Homecoming” believers will experience will happen when Jesus returns again to bring us back home with Him.

The Bible refers to this “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠" as the “𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭.” .” Jesus shared with the disciples that we do not know exactly the date when this “Home Coming” will be: 𝑯𝙤𝒘𝙚𝒗𝙚𝒓, 𝙣𝒐 𝒐𝙣𝒆 𝒌𝙣𝒐𝙬 𝙩𝒉𝙚 𝙙𝒂𝙮 𝙤𝒓 𝒉𝙤𝒖𝙧 𝙬𝒉𝙚𝒏 𝒕𝙝𝒆𝙨𝒆 𝒕𝙝𝒊𝙣𝒈𝙨 𝙬𝒊𝙡𝒍 𝒉𝙖𝒑𝙥𝒆𝙣, 𝒏𝙤𝒕 𝒕𝙝𝒆 𝒂𝙣𝒈𝙚𝒍𝙨 𝙞𝒏 𝒉𝙚𝒂𝙫𝒆𝙣 𝙤𝒓 𝒕𝙝𝒆 𝑺𝙤𝒏 𝑯𝙞𝒎𝙨𝒆𝙡𝒇. 𝑶𝙣𝒍𝙮 𝙩𝒉𝙚 𝙁𝒂𝙩𝒉𝙚𝒓 𝒌𝙣𝒐𝙬𝒔. (𝙈𝒂𝙩𝒕𝙝𝒆𝙬 24:36)

Even though we do not know the date of this “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠,” we are told through a series of parables found in 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙬 25 how we are to live our lives so we are prepared to experience it when it happens. In the parable of the Ten Bridesmaids (𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙬 25:1-13),Jesus reveals how every person is responsible for his or her own spiritual condition and readiness when He does return.

We do this by making the decision to put our trust and faith in His as our Savior. Then in the Parable of the Loaned Money (𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙬 25:14-30), Jesus shares how a true reflection of our love and feelings toward Him is revealed in our willingness to use the gifts and talents He has entrusted to us well in our day-to-day living. Finally in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats (𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝟮𝟱:𝟯𝟭-𝟰𝟲), Jesus shares that our desire to serve others in need is also an indicator that we are prepared for 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 because we are doing these things out of our love for Him. None of these three parables by themselves completely describes our preparation and readiness to be part of 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠. Instead, each one of these parables reveal one part of the complete picture. This is a "𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠" we do not want to miss out on, and will be so blessed and thankful to experience it one day.

As we hear about "𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠"weekends happening at Western this weekend and other universities and colleges in the coming weeks, let’s make sure they serve as a reminder to us of our need to keep living our lives in the way Jesus describes for us so that we will be part of His second "𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠" As the hymn “When We all Get To Heaven” states, 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝑫𝒂𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑹𝒆𝒋𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆.
