Deception begins with an act of the will. “Plato’s Cave”

“Scripture confirms what Plato described, showing again and again that the human heart tends to prefer illusion over reality. Jesus describes spiritual blindness not as a lack of intelligence but as a condition of the will: “Seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear” (Matthew 13:13). The problem is not missing information. It is the refusal to act on it.

Paul warns that deception can feel deeply comfortable when we choose it: “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25).

Deception is rarely ugly or obvious. It usually feels reasonable, safe, and confirmed by the people around us.

This is why the New Testament’s most urgent warnings about deception are aimed not at pagans but at believers: “Let no one deceive you” (Matthew 24:4).

The danger is not ignorance. It is a comfortable certainty that blinds us to the need for correction.”
