The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary (Aug. 15)

Service at 10am

Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradition of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Savior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preaching, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God. With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim. But one Jew, moved by malice, audaciously stretched forth his hand upon the bed and immediately received from divine judgment the wages of his audacity. Those daring hands were severed by an invisible blow. But when he repented and asked forgiveness, his hands were restored. When they had reached the place called Gethsemane, they buried there with honor the all-immaculate body of the Theotokos, which was the source of Life. But on the third day after the burial, when they were eating together, and raised up the artos (bread) in Jesus' Name, as was their custom, the Theotokos appeared in the air, saying "Rejoice" to them. From this they learned concerning the bodily translation of the Theotokos into the Heavens. These things has the Church received from the traditions of the Fathers, who have composed many hymns out of reverence, to the glory of the Mother of our God (see Oct. 3 and 4).

Apolytikion of Dormition of the Theotokos in the First Tone

In birth, you preserved your virginity; in death, you did not abandon the world, O Theotokos. As mother of life, you departed to the source of life, delivering our souls from death by your intercessions.

Kontakion of Dormition of the Theotokos in the Second Tone

Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life.

Beirut explosion: Video of church altar's survival brings hope.

St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Church in Achrafieh is less than a kilometre away from where the Beirut explosion took place.

Father Youil Nassif rushed to the church to check for damage, finding the nave completely ruined. But the sacred altar space, protected - including an oil lamp that had remained lit throughout the blast.

Watch short clip video

Glory be to God

This Greek Orthodox church's altar survived the blast unscathed - even its oil lamp stayed lit.

Dear Community Members and Beloved Parishioners.

There have been some changes in regards to the way services are now being conducted within our Church. The Church Community Council has been in consent communication and consultation with a vast number of individuals of our Community in reflection to further restrictions that have been recently applied to Churches by both our Local Municipal and Provincial Medical Officers and Public Health Unit. As a result, after several open discussions with Parishioners, the Church Community Council has decided to undertake the following actions until further changes. All services will take place outdoors under a tent with speakerphones (excluding the Priest, Chanter and Neokoro who will serve the Liturgy in the Holy Altar) and; there will not be the distribution of the Holy Eucharist or Andidoro to the faithful.

The Church Community Council has taken these difficult steps to assure the safety and well-being of all individuals as well as the conformity of the Public Health Unit during this trying period and restrictions on our Church and Orthodox Liturgical Practices and Dogmatic Rites.

We appreciate your support and understanding as these changes are only temporarily and hopefully non-existent by weeks end. We ask you to not resort in any slanderous discussions and accusations but rather to remain steadfast in love and prayer.

If you have any feedback, comments and or concerns please do not hesitate to contact your Community Council Secretary, Chris Nicholas at Email: [email protected]

Note: Church Services will continue as posted in August Schedule for Divine Service (previously posted on Facebook and Community Website).

Procession of the Holy Cross (August 1st)

Because of the many diseases that occur in the month of August, the custom prevailed of old in Constantinople to carry the precious Wood of the Cross in procession throughout the city for its sanctification and its deliverance from illnesses. It was brought forth from the imperial treasury on the last day of July and placed upon the Holy Table of the Great Church of the Holy Wisdom; and beginning today, until the Dormition of the Theotokos, it was carried in procession throughout the city and was set forth for veneration before the people.

Apolytikion of Proodos of the Holy Cross in the First Tone

Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross.

Kontakion of Proodos of the Holy Cross in the Fourth Tone

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.
