The Second Sunday of Advent draws us deeper into holy waiting. At Church of the Holy Incarnation, even our name points us to the mystery that the eternal Son truly took on our flesh, entering our history in humility so that He might come again in glory.
This Sunday sits in the tension between promise and judgment: Christ comes both as gentle Savior and as the One who will winnow, purify, and set all things right. The Collect used asks that God’s holy Scriptures may be heard, read, marked, learned, and inwardly digested, so that through patience and the comfort they give, believers may embrace and hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life. The whole liturgy therefore trains the heart not only to rejoice that Christ has come, but to long for His coming again, and to allow His word to reshape desires and habits now
To help you pray and reflect this week, consider listening to the classic Advent hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” a beloved piece of our heritage that gives voice to the Church’s longing for God-with-us. May this season find us watching, repenting, and hoping together, awaiting the King who once lay in a manger and who will come again to make all things new.
