One of the best resources for Catholic parents (besides the Me & My House program, of course!) lives very close by. It is the mom and dad in the neighbourhood who are accumulating their wins and losses, all the while taking mental and conscious notes of them.

“We’ll never let our kids do that again!”
“We’ll definitely be doing that with our next child.”

Statements like these are gold.

They are nuggets of wisdom gleaned through hard earned experience. In many ways, they are like the final pages of a book that reveal whether all of the tedious pages before it are worth the effort.

Being a Dad is awesome.
Dads are their children’s heroes.

Dads are known for putting together great race tracks. For being able to have a civil discourse about politics, as much as slime or snot. For building fires, forts, fixing cars, and capturing pesky raccoons.

Want to know how to become a hero dad to your kids? Check out these 7 tips from seasoned dad of 8, Kenton!

"As parents, we often take on the world—or at least, assume that we have to. We feel the weight of the day, the weight of the week, and the weight of the month on our shoulders. We worry if we have what it takes. We worry if we are enough. And we worry what will happen if we just don’t make the cut. We wonder how our children will turn out. We wonder if we are doing enough, wonder if we are doing too much, and wonder if we missed opportunities. We worry, we pray, we grow anxious, we hope, we distress, we trust."

Our journey of parenthood can be punctuated by all too many worries if we don't step back and reorder our day and our life around God. And once we do, everything else will fall into their proper place.

Pray. Surrender. Try again. In these 3 simple steps we can take the pressure of parenting off of our shoulders.

This week's parenting article comes from Cassie Everts, a fellow Catholic mom, writer, and the voice behind the blog, Everyday Ann.

Fr. Raph writes,

"The month of May, traditionally devoted to Our Lady, is as good a time as any, I think, to have a look at the place that Mary has in our lives and in the lives of our families.

Does she even have a place?

Is my devotion to Mary just something I think I’m supposed to do because I’m “Catholic”?

Have I entrusted anything to Mary’s care?

I think it goes without saying that we’ve got nothing to lose by letting Mary into our lives and into our homes. She will take care of us and our children in ways better than any we could ever figure out on our own."

Kenton writes,

"A child's Baptism is more than just a Catholic parent's duty. It is the moment when original sin is washed away from your child's soul and he or she is made a new creation. God's grace unites with their soul and they become a child of the King. Their salvation journey begins and the gateway to the rest of the Holy Sacraments is opened to them.

This is worthy of celebration!

We've been to a number of Catholic baby Baptisms over the years and have adopted a few of the traditions we witnessed. Here are some you may consider as you prepare for your infant's Baptism!"

"Homeschooling is something my husband and I were discerning since the first of our fourteen children arrived.

It was something that I definitely did not want to do … but had resolved to undertake if God asked me to."

Can you relate to that feeling?

How do you go about making this big decision that impacts your whole family?

"My family always sticks out like a sore thumb when we visit a new parish. No matter how quietly we try to enter the church, heads always turn, ushers always rush over, and sometimes there’s some tricky negotiations to be made on where we can sit. We’re not trying to cause a scene, but the fact that the two youngest of our five children use power wheelchairs to get around means visiting an unfamiliar building is always fraught with uncertainty.

Our children’s disabilities are quite visible, and can’t be ignored ..."

The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead is history’s greatest reminder that God can fix the worst that we can do.

And the Lord didn’t just fix things.

Instead, He made everything better by providing something that was previously unavailable—that is, the possibility of eternal life and the grace to get there.

This should be a wonderful source of consolation for many parents. After all, who hasn’t wondered at the long term effects of our parenting mistakes?

Some of us yell too much.
Some of us overload our kids with far too much responsibility.
Some of us give our kids far too little responsibility.

Yes, God can cover all of this and more with His grace (and He does!), helping each generation to become the best version of themselves often in spite of the many wounds sustained in childhood.

HOWEVER (did you notice I put that in all caps?), what God will not do is improve our parenting for us.

Does that shock you? It shouldn't ...

We talk to our children a lot about what they are going to be when they grow up.

Not the career stuff…

but the vocation stuff.

For example, some years ago when we were all at a shrine in the United States, every one of us (with the exception of our youngest then, Sophia) took turns going into the small chapel to ask the God of the universe: What are you calling me to be?

The children of course came back with very different replies.

Gabriel, the oldest, came back with the most benign reaction in the world: “God wants me to be a priest.”

Apparently, Gabriel knew that already.

Tobias came back and whispered with a hint of sadness in my ear: “I didn’t hear anything.”

“Don’t worry Tobias," I said to him. "Sometimes Daddy has to really listen hard with my ears and my heart to hear God’s whispers too. Let’s try again soon.”

Benjamin returned with a happy grin. “I think Jesus is telling me to be a daddy like you … because, you know, I am good with babies.”

Hannah exited the chapel with arms crossed and an "I told you so" look on her face. “I’m going to be a nun,” was all she would say.

And Jonah, who would soon be four years old, had apparently received the greatest news of all.

With a wide smile on his face, he pulled me down to his height to report his conversation with Jesus: “He wants me to be happy.”

He is right.

Your vocation, no matter what you have been called to, should bring joy.

What vocation has God called you to? Are you living it out with joy?
