It was a lovely day for the Remembrance Service on Sunday September 22, 2024 at Ocean View Cemetery in Birch Plain. This year Evelyn and Alexander Smith were celebrated and remembered. The hymns were ‘Come Let us Sing of a Wonderful Love’ and ‘Coinnich Mi’, both of which had been sung at Evelyn’s funeral. Donald Smith led the service with prayers and readings from the bible, and Murdoch MacDonald gave reflections about those who are buried at Ocean View. We gathered back at St. Ann’s Bay Church for tea and oatcakes, along with stories about Evelyn and Alex. The memory board and photos brought back fond memories of them both. Thanks to Marion for getting the ‘srùbag’ ready and for taking the group photo. The church where we gathered was one of seven United Churches in Cape Breton that were built by our maternal grandfather, Alexander ‘Sandy’ MacDermid.

The special Service of Remembrance for the children was held at the Ocean View Cemetery on July 30th. Following the service, those that attended gathered at St. Ann’s United Church. There were displays of children’s photos who are buried at Ocean View, along with photos of relatives. We had tea and oatcakes, and reflected about the children and others while looking over the photos.

A special thank you to Anne MacDermid for organizing the service.

Due to the severe weather alert of heavy rainfall and the risk of flash flooding, the Service of Remembrance has been cancelled for today. It has been rescheduled to next Sunday, July 30th.

A trip 'Down North' to the Ocean View Cemetery in Birch Plain. We gathered, we worked, we reminisced. It was a scorcher, but we got it done. After everything was cleaned up, we went to the Dancing Moose Cafe for lunch and more conversation.

There will be a service at the cemetery in July, where the children that are buried in Ocean View will have a special remembrance.
