What does faithfulness look like when life becomes difficult?

In this week’s message, we continue our series through 2 Timothy, A Legacy of Faith – Faithful to the Finish. Last week, we saw that a good soldier of Jesus Christ is strengthened by God’s grace, continually learning God’s Word, and faithfully passing the gospel on to others. This week, Paul takes Timothy one step further. He moves from preparation to perseverance.

Writing from a Roman prison and facing the possibility of death, Paul gives Timothy a realistic picture of the Christian life. Following Christ is not always easy. There will be distractions, hardships, opposition, and moments when faithfulness is tested. Yet Paul reminds Timothy—and us—that the Christian life is not sustained by talent, personality, or position. It is sustained by a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

Using the illustrations of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer, Paul teaches us how believers remain focused on Christ and His mission. He calls us to meditate on the gospel, endure hardship with hope, and remain faithful because Christ Himself is faithful.

Join us this Sunday as we discover part 2 of what it means to be a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ — Part 1 2 Timothy 2:1–2 May 24th 2026

As we continue our sermon series through 2 Timothy, A Legacy of Faith – Faithful to the Finish, this Sunday we come to 2 Timothy 2:1–2 and the beginning of a new message titled, “A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ – Part 1.”

In these verses, the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy like a seasoned commander preparing a younger soldier for the realities of spiritual battle and faithful ministry. Timothy is facing discouragement, suffering, false teaching, and pressure from the culture around him. Before Paul calls him to endure hardship later in the chapter, he first reminds Timothy how a good soldier of Jesus Christ is prepares.

Paul points Timothy to three foundational truths. A good soldier of Jesus Christ must live in the power of the Holy Spirit, continually depending upon the grace and power of the Holy Spirit rather than relying on personal strength. A good soldier must also remain a lifelong learner of God’s Word, continually growing, listening, and being shaped by biblical truth. Finally, a good soldier faithfully entrusts the gospel to others, helping raise up the next generation of disciples preparing others for the mission.

This passage reminds us that Christianity is not a passive faith. Join us this Sunday as we consider what it means to live as good soldiers of Jesus Christ in a world that clearly needs them. May we be strengthened by grace, grounded in truth, and committed to helping others follow Christ.
