Sermon discussion questions from this past Sunday, May 31st, 2026:
The Book of Acts - Unexpected Ending (Acts 12: 20-25)
1) Why do you think the people shouted what they did in Acts 12:22? Can you think of similar sorts of situations today when people either see human rulers as somehow more-than-human (or at least treat the that way to stroke their ego and gain their favor?)
2) Herod accepted the praise and glory that belonged to God alone. How does spiritual pride or the desire for human applause manifest in our lives today, and how can we actively guard against it?
3) What should Herod have done in response to the peoples' shouting? Look at Acts 10: 25-26, Acts 14: 12-15, Revelation 19:10 for examples.
4) How does the tragic death of Herod (Acts 12:23) act as a direct contrast to the statement in verse 24 that "the word of God continued to increase and spread"?
5) When you look at the events of Chapter 12 as a whole - the martyrdom of James, the miraculous rescue of Peter and the judgement of Herod - what do these stories reveal about God's providence and timing?
6) How does the contrast between the unstoppable Word of God and the ultimate downfall of a powerful ruler encourage you when you face opposition or feel powerless in today's culture?
