Why do Christians gather every Sunday?

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession says:

“God wants to be worshiped through faith so that we receive from Him those things He promises and offers.”

This is one of the most beautiful things Lutheran Christians confess about worship.

We do not come to church first because God needs something from us. We come because God has something to give. He gathers His people by His Word. He forgives sins. He comforts troubled consciences. He strengthens faith. He feeds His Church with the body and blood of Christ.

This is why we call our Sunday worship the Divine Service. Before it is our service to God, it is God’s service to us in Christ.

Our hymns, prayers, confession, and thanksgiving all have their place. They are the grateful response of faith. But the beginning is always God’s mercy.

The doors of the church open again every Sunday because Christ still delights to gather His people, speak His Word, and give His gifts.

From last Sunday’s sermon:

“And yet Simon does not stop with what the night has shown him. He answers, ‘Nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.’ Nothing outward has changed. The boats are still empty. The men are still tired. The long night is still fresh in Simon’s mind. Yet he lets down the net because Christ has spoken. ‘At Your word’ does not deny the weariness; it places the weariness beneath the voice of the Lord. It is faith learning to live by what Christ says, even when the eyes can see only emptiness.”

Why Liturgy?

If you've never been to a Lutheran church, one of the first things you might notice is that our worship follows a historic liturgy.

Why?

Because Christian worship has never been about creating a new experience each week. It is about receiving the same gifts Christ has promised to give His Church.

The liturgy fills our ears with Holy Scripture, our lips with prayer and praise, and our hearts with God's promises. Week after week, it leads us to Christ—who still forgives sins, speaks through His Word, and feeds His people in the Holy Communion.

The liturgy is not a performance. It is not a tradition preserved for tradition's sake. It is a faithful way of confessing the unchanging Gospel and receiving the gifts our Lord delights to give.

Join us this Sunday as we gather around Christ's Word and Sacraments.
