Fall Fair season is almost here!

Join us at Holy Family Church for our September Fall Fair on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 AM–2:00 PM at 63 Church St., Amherst.

There will be plenty to browse, eat and enjoy, including our indoor yard sale, Kid Zone, Shirley & Friends Boutique, fudge and desserts, tea & coffee, basket draws, silent auction, crafts, raffles and much more.

It’s a great chance to spend a fall Saturday with friends and neighbours, find a few treasures, enjoy some treats and support Holy Family Church.

We extend our condolences to Bernard family and friends as they mourn his passing.

With deep sorrow, we the sister's announce the peaceful passing of our beloved brother "Bernard William Melanson" age 79, of Joggins, NS at the Halifax Infirmary on August 5th, 2026.

Born in River Hebert on March 6th, 1947, he was the son of the late Frank Melanson and Elizabeth (Hyden) Melanson-Scopie.

He is survived by his daughters Michelle Melanson, Ont. and Kara Melanson, Ont. Sisters Sonia Bester, Barrie, Ont, Darlene Mitchell (Neil), Joggins, NS, Jean-Marie Scopie, Oxford, NS, Pamela Brown (Steve MacLeod), Amherst, NS, and his best friend Tim McEachern of Heather's Beach, NS. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Daniel Melanson, sister Sandra (Melanson) Libby, brothers; Thomas Melanson, Robert (Bob) Scopie and Michael Scopie.

Special thanks from the family for the love and care provided by the doctor's and nurses on the medical unit at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, NS and the doctor's and nurses at the Halifax Infirmary Cardiac Care Unit.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church Street, Amherst, NS. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date in the St. Dennis cemetery, Minudie, NS.

To honor his memory, contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends as they mourn his passing.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of James Russell Wilson, age 61 of Lower Maccan on Tuesday August 18, 2026 with his loving family by his side at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst.

Following Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church Street, Amherst, NS.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

The closest Mi’kmaw communities to Cumberland are Amlamgog (Fort Folly) and Millbrook First Nations. Franklin Manor 22 (in the Qospemk/Lakelands area north of Parrsboro) is uninhabited and co-owned by Paqtnkek and Pictou Landing First Nations. However, there are several Mi’kmaw families living throughout different parts of Cumberland.

There are many resources available if you want to learn some phrases in the Mi’kmaw language! Try downloading the L’nui’suti app to learn animals, colours, emotions, food, and much more.

The purpose of this series is to learn about the many types of people in Cumberland. In a movie’s end credits, you see the many types of thinkers and skilled workers are needed to make it happen. The same is true in a community; the many differences between us help cover everything that makes Cumberland beautiful and functional!

We also join Pope Leo XIV in his expression of sorrow, in condoling the victims and in praying for the survivors.

In his telegram to the Colombian Bishops’ Conference, the Holy Father prayed for our Lord to “pour out upon the beloved Colombian people the gifts of spiritual strength and Christian hope.” Now, we are calling Canadians to be the vehicles of that Christian hope by giving generously to help the survivors of the Colombia earthquake.
