St. Finnan's Basilica

St. Finnan's Basilica St. Finnan's is a spectacular example of the earliest Cathedrals constructed in Upper Canada. By 1853, St. Finnan's became a cathedral.

Finnan's has been a testament to the Catholic community in Glengarry for well over a century and a half. An older church stood on this site beside the older cemetery since 1833, a year after the parish was founded by the Reverend Alexander Macdonell, first Catholic Bishop of Upper Canada. Finnan's Parish boasted 265 families of whom 134 were Macdonalds of various spellings. Finnan's Church was ded

icated in 1885, but work continued over the next 25 years. The present steeple, bells and cross were installed in 1902. In 1890, when the Diocese of Alexandria was created, the Reverend Alexander Macdonell became the first Bishop of Alexandria and St.

After many dedicated years of faithful service to our parish community, Father Gilles will be retiring. We are deeply grateful for his spiritual guidance, kindness, and commitment to all of us throughout the years. Father Gilles has been a blessing to our parish family, and we thank him sincerely for all he has done.
We are also pleased to announce that Father Romeo will be joining our parish.

Shirley Lajoie passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Family and friends are invited to visitation at Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria, Ontario (613-525-2772), on Friday, May 29, from 2–4pm and 6–8pm, and again on Saturday, May 30, from 9:30am-10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Finnan’s Cathedral, Alexandria, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 11am. Interment for Shirley and Bert will take place immediately afterwards at St. Finnan’s Parish Cemetery with a reception to follow.
