You are invited to join us this Sunday at St. Bernadette Parish Ajax, for an afternoon of prayer and reflection. Starts at 2pm with a short video on “Love and Mercy” Faustina in the Parish Hall, followed by prayer of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in the Church at 3pm.
Ever wondered what this is all about? Here are 5 things to know about Divine Mercy Sunday:
1: IT WAS INSTITUTED BY THE CHURCH THROUGH ST. FAUSTINA’S MESSAGE
Divine Mercy Sunday was officially established by the Church through the inspiration given to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who received revelations about God’s mercy. These messages were later promoted strongly by Pope John Paul II, who canonized her and declared this special feast for the whole Church in the year 2000.
2: IT IS CELEBRATED ON THE SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
Divine Mercy Sunday always falls on the Second Sunday of Easter, immediately after the celebration of the Resurrection. This timing reminds us that the greatest proof of God’s mercy is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The wounds of Christ, shown after Easter, are signs not of defeat, but of mercy flowing to the world.
3: JESUS PROMISED EXTRAORDINARY GRACES ON THIS DAY
According to the message given to St. Faustina, Jesus promised that those who go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, and trust in His mercy on this day will receive very special spiritual graces. The focus is not magic or ritual, but sincere repentance, faith, and a desire to begin again with God.
4: THE DIVINE MERCY IMAGE AND THE CHAPLET ARE CENTRAL DEVOTIONS
The image of Jesus with rays of red and pale light coming from His heart, with the words “Jesus, I trust in You,” is closely connected to this feast. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is also commonly prayed, especially at 3:00 p.m., known as the Hour of Mercy, the time traditionally associated with Jesus’ death on the cross.
5: THE MESSAGE OF THE DAY IS SIMPLE: TRUST AND MERCY
The heart of Divine Mercy Sunday is captured in two actions:
-Trust in God’s mercy
-Show mercy to others
It is a day that reminds us that no sin is greater than God’s mercy when a person turns back to Him sincerely.
JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU! Amen 🙏🏼
