St. Francis de Sales Parish St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church. About St. Francis de Sales

St. He came from a wealthy and noble family. At first, his father refused to allow St.

Francis de Sales was born in 1567 in the Castle of Sales in Savoy France, close to the Swiss border. Francis eventually studied at the University of Padua where his brilliant writings and mind were discovered. Francis to be ordained, trying instead to marry him off, but eventually he relented and St. Francis was ordained on December 18, 1593. Following his ordination he was assigned to Protestant

missionary territory in Chablais, France, causing his father to fear Francis would be martyred. At the time, there were over 30,000 Protestants and only about 100 Catholics. During his ministry there, he suffered many attacks on his life. Since there was such a small number of Catholics in the area, St. Francis began writing them letters, which were then passed from household to household. Eventually even the Protestant hardliners were intrigued by this young priest. Many of the people converted back to Catholicism and the bishop deemed it now safe enough to visit the area. Francis was soon appointed Bishop of Geneva in 1602. Francis is remembered for two great contributions to the spirituality of the everyday person; “Introduction to a Devout Life” and “Treatise on the Love of God”. Francis died on December 28, 1622 in the Chablais region. At the time, there remained only about 100 Protestants in the area. He was canonized in 1665 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877 when Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of journalists.

Posted • The Lord always wants what is good and best for our lives. He is always asking us to rely on him for what we need and to give generously from what He has given us. He wants us to flourish and provide for ourselves and our families, but not to value prosperity at the expense of our spiritual well-being. This week’s reading challenges our relationship to money and perhaps the disordered value we place upon independence and security that we often place above pursuing His love and His will. He may ask us to pass through seasons of insecurity or lay down the restless pursuit of accumulation so that we learn to rely more on Him and less on ourselves and appreciate all that He gives as a gift and blessing rather than take things for granted. If we understand what Jesus has done for us, we know that we cannot place our identity and value in our material wealth: we are all poor, we are all in need of salvation which He offers to each and all of us. Salvation is not something we earn but instead is something we receive. From this place of humility and gratitude, we receive everything as a blessing.

Let us pray:

Jesus, come and be the centre of our hearts. Reveal to us where we have placed other desires and values above your love and will and where we look down upon others who do not meet our standard of success. Teach us to trust in you, to give generously from what you have provided to us, and to receive the salvation you offer to us freely. Amen.
