"It is well with my soul." Horatio Stafford wrote those words not out of bitterness, but out of triumph. He had just learned his ship was passing over the very waters where his four daughters had drowned.

"When sorrow like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul." These are not just poetic words. They are words drenched with tears.

We take care of our hearts, our minds, and our bodies, but our soul often gets neglected, and that is dangerous, because according to the Bible, the soul is the most valuable thing we have. What does it profit a person to gain the whole world and lose their soul? Nothing in all creation has the capital to buy back a single soul.

The Lord turned and looked at Peter after his denial. I don't believe it was a look of anger or condemnation. Jesus had already told Peter this would happen, so it wasn't a surprise. I believe it was a look with heartbreak, but with love. A look that says, I see your pain, I see your fear, I see your weakness, and I still love you. This failure is not your end.

Grace doesn't leave us where it found us. It's not just pardon, it's power. It's not just forgiveness, it's formation. Like a good coach, God doesn't stand on the sidelines watching us fail. He comes down onto the field, puts His hands around us, and says that wasn't so good, but let's keep moving forward. If you're growing slowly, that's okay. You're still growing.
