A doula who cares for you, isn’t one who offers opinions or advice on what you “should” do. She’s one who waits, watches and learns what your heart is crying out. You may not even recognize that small voice, but she sees it. It often doesn’t sound like your original plan. Or even reflect the steadiness you thought you’d be capable of during contractions.
Being a true mirror means acknowledging the hard feelings as well as reflecting strength, reminding you of what you are capable of.
Being a true mirror means readjusting the angle so that you might peer in, take another look, and realize what’s beneath all the hub bub isn’t what you “thought” you wanted.
Being a true mirror means recognizing in the way you ask questions that you aren’t really asking. Your telling the room your new needs, you’ve been taught to ask permission as a woman. But a mirror shows you that your needs don’t need asking, that your intuition is trustworthy, and that your voice is much stronger than how it feels as it breaks when you request a pivot.
A mirror is comfortable knowing that this experience isn’t about them, but all about reflecting back to you. That’s how you know you’ve found yourself a good doula.
