WHY SPEAK IN TONGUES?
(The Reasons For Speaking God’s “Strange” Language)
📖TO THE BIBLE 1 Corinthians 14:4 AMPC
“He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself….”

When you receive the Holy Spirit, you receive the power of God to dwell in you, as Jesus said (Acts 1:8). This power is activated when you speak in other tongues. The Greek word translated as “edifies” in the opening scripture is “oikodomeo,” which means to construct, build up, embolden, or charge up like a battery. Therefore, this verse is telling us that the one who speaks in tongues builds themselves up like an edifice. They embolden themselves and charge themselves like a battery.
When you take time to speak in other tongues, you are building up your spirit: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20). If you were weak in your Christian life, as you speak in tongues, the dormant power of God within you will be stirred, and you will be strengthened to do the things of God.
