The Diocese of Francistown today held a press briefing to officially update the media and the public on preparations for the upcoming Episcopal Ordination and Installation of Bishop-elect, Lawrence Ofentse Pheto, which is scheduled to take place on 27 June 2026 at Obed Itani Chilume Sports Stadium.
The briefing was led by the Diocese Administrator, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Afagbegee, and the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Anthony Mosalagae, together with two lay representatives, Mrs Tebo Daniel and Mr Geret Shunje speaking on behalf of the faithful of the Diocese. The briefing highlighted the significance of this historic moment in the life of the Diocese of Francistown, the Catholic Church in Botswana, and the wider community.
During the presentation, the Diocese Administrator shared a brief history of the Diocese of Francistown, its mission of evangelisation, education, youth formation, community development, and its continued commitment to promoting peace, justice, and human dignity. The gathering also reflected on the important role of a Bishop as the chief shepherd, teacher of the faith, and spiritual leader entrusted with guiding the People of God.
Members of the media were introduced to the life and ministry of Bishop-elect Msgr. Lawrence Ofentse Pheto, whose appointment was announced on 10 April 2026. His years of faithful service to the Church, both in pastoral ministry and Canon Law, were highlighted as a testimony to his dedication, humility, and commitment to the mission of Christ.
The Cathedral Administrator further outlined the significance of the Episcopal Ordination, which symbolizes the continuation of Apostolic leadership, the growth and maturity of the Diocese, the renewal of pastoral mission, and the unity of the faithful. The celebration is expected to attract approximately 10,000 pilgrims and guests, including bishops from the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, priests, religious men and women, government officials, traditional leaders, ecumenical representatives, and faithful from across Botswana and beyond.
The Diocese also acknowledged the tireless efforts of the various organizing committees working diligently to ensure the success of the event, including the Liturgy, Communication, Health, Protocol, Security, Finance, Logistics, Accommodation, Decorations, Catering, and Merchandise Committees.
We were honoured by the presence of members of the media fraternity, including Duma FM, Gabz FM, Daily News, and Radio Botswana, whose continued partnership helps share important information with the nation and beyond.
The Diocese of Francistown extends its heartfelt appreciation to Government authorities, security agencies, health services, traditional leaders, sponsors, benefactors, volunteers, and the media for their continued support and collaboration.
As preparations continue, the Diocese invites all people of goodwill to accompany Bishop-elect Msgr. Lawrence Ofentse Pheto in prayer and to join in celebrating this historic and grace-filled occasion. May this Episcopal Ordination be a source of renewed faith, unity, hope, and service for the Church and the nation of Botswana.
