🌿 St. Joseph's Parish Membership Highlight 🌿
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”
Psalm 100:1–2
There are some people whose presence you notice the moment they walk into a room. There are others whose absence you immediately feel when they are not there. And then there are those rare individuals whose presence becomes woven into the fabric of a community.
Valentine Maura, affectionately known to many as “Val,” is one of those special people.
Psalm 100:1–2 speaks beautifully to the life and gifts that Val has shared with so many throughout his life. “Serve the Lord with gladness” and “come before his presence with singing.” Few people embody those words quite like Val, because bringing joy, laughter, music, and fellowship to others seems to come naturally to him.
Val has a natural comedic personality and possesses the remarkable ability to make almost anyone laugh. Put him in a group setting and, before long, one of his funny stories, quick observations, or perfectly timed jokes will have everyone smiling.
And God help you if Val decides that you are going to be the subject of his jokes!
Once he starts clowning on you, there is often no escape. He will keep going until everyone around you is laughing, and somehow, before it is over, you may find yourself laughing at your own self too.
That is simply Val.
His humor is not merely entertainment. It is one of the gifts he brings into every group, ministry, gathering, and community in which he participates. He has a unique ability to break the tension, bring people together, brighten a difficult moment, and remind us that even in the midst of life's challenges, there is still room for joy.
But beneath the laughter is a brilliant and intellectual mind.
Val's life reflects a remarkable combination of intelligence, creativity, professionalism, faith, leadership, talent, resilience, and service.
For many years, Val has been a constant and familiar presence at St. Joseph's Parish. His contribution to our parish family cannot be measured by one ministry or one title. His fingerprints can be found across many aspects of our parish life.
One of the gifts for which he is especially known is his beautiful voice.
For years, Val has used that voice to help lead God's people in prayer and worship. His singing has stirred the souls of countless parishioners, and for many of us, hearing him sing “In the Garden” is a cherished St. Joseph's experience.
Val has served for numerous years as a Choir Director, providing leadership to both choirs at St. Joseph's Parish. He currently serves as a member of the St. Joseph's 6:30 AM Men's Choir Group, continuing a musical ministry that has blessed our parish for generations.
He also serves as a Cantor for regular Church Funeral Masses, using his voice to help families encounter comfort, peace, and hope during some of life's most difficult moments.
His musical ministry has extended beyond St. Joseph's as well. He previously served as Choir Director at Holy Family Church and has been a member of the Diocesan Chorale.
Val is also an Ex Officio Member of the Knights of Columbus, continuing his connection to Catholic service and fellowship.
Yet Val's service does not end at the doors of the Church.
He has spent much of his life investing in people and community. He is a longstanding member of the Bahamas Cancer Society, a member of the People to People Program, a Senior Advisor of the Junior Achievement Youth Program, and a Member and Lecturer of the Institute of Bankers.
He is also a Member and Chapter Leader of Us TOO Prostate Cancer Bahamas.
Perhaps one of the most powerful chapters of Val's personal story is his journey as an 11 year prostate cancer survivor.
His life stands as a testimony of courage, perseverance, resilience, faith, and determination. Having faced a challenge that could have changed the course of his life, Val has continued to serve, laugh, sing, lead, encourage, and give of himself to others.
His testimony reminds us that our greatest challenges do not have to define us. Sometimes, they become part of the story through which God reveals our strength and purpose.
Val's leadership has also extended into the sporting community. He served as Commissioner of the New Providence Old Timers Softball Association on two occasions, contributing his leadership and experience to a community built around fellowship, competition, friendship, and camaraderie.
Professionally, Val built an impressive career in Trust Administration over many years, serving with several Trust Companies, from Trust Corporation of The Bahamas to UBS/Swiss Bank. As a Qualified Trust Officer, he brought knowledge, discipline, professionalism, and intellectual ability to a specialized field requiring great responsibility and integrity.
But perhaps what makes Val's story even more fascinating is the sheer diversity of his gifts.
He has also been a man of the theatre and stage.
Val has taken leading roles in productions including The Landlord, Guanahani, and The More the Merrier, while also playing starring roles in many productions of James Catalyn and Friends.
His talents extended to radio as well, where he held leading roles in the ZNS morning radio production “Sister Sarah's Kitchen.”
From the boardroom to the choir loft, from the theatre stage to the radio studio, from the softball field to the parish, Val has continually demonstrated that a life of purpose can take many forms.
His educational journey includes Saint Francis Xavier Lower School, SAC High School, Aquinas High School, Rochester State Community College, and the New York Academy of Fine Arts.
Each chapter has contributed to the remarkable tapestry of a life dedicated to learning, creativity, service, and people.
But perhaps the greatest measure of a person's life is not the number of positions held, awards received, or accomplishments listed on a résumé.
It is the number of lives touched.
And Val has touched many.
He has made people laugh when they needed laughter.
He has lifted voices when people needed prayer.
He has comforted families when they needed strength.
He has encouraged young people when they needed guidance.
He has served communities when they needed leadership.
He has shared his talents when they could bring people together.
And through his own journey, he has shown what it means to keep moving forward with courage and faith.
Val, your life is a beautiful reminder that God gives each of us unique gifts, and those gifts become most powerful when we share them with others.
Your humor brings joy.
Your intellect brings wisdom.
Your voice brings beauty.
Your leadership brings direction.
Your resilience brings inspiration.
And your service leaves a legacy.
St. Joseph's Parish is blessed to call you one of our own.
We thank God for Valentine “Val” Maura, for the many years he has shared his gifts with our parish, our Church, and our wider Bahamian community.
May God continue to bless your voice so that it may keep stirring souls.
May He continue to bless your mind so that your wisdom may continue to benefit others.
May He continue to strengthen your body and spirit.
May He continue to fill your heart with the joy that you so freely give to everyone around you.
And may He grant you many more years to sing, serve, lead, perform, encourage, inspire, and, of course, make everybody laugh.
Because St. Joseph's would not quite be the same without Val.
Val, thank you for being exactly who God created you to be.
Thank you for the laughter.
Thank you for the music.
Thank you for the service.
Thank you for the wisdom.
Thank you for the memories.
And most of all, thank you for the gift of your presence among us.
