The Ed Johnson Family - Church-Planting Missionaries in Brazil since 2008

The Ed Johnson Family - Church-Planting Missionaries in Brazil since 2008 Representing our Lord Jesus Christ as church-planting missionaries in Brazil since 2008! In college, I also met my wife, Maribel.

I was born and grew up in Brazil where my parents, Dan and Gerri Johnson, have been faithfully serving as missionaries since 1974. I was saved when I was twelve and was already heavily involved in the ministry as a teenager. In 1998 I went to Bible college to prepare for the ministry and while there the Lord called me to go back to the people of Brazil as a missionary. Maribel was born in El Paso,

Texas but grew up in Mexico until she was nine at which point her family moved from Mexico to Denver, CO. When she was 15 she was invited to attend a Baptist church by a friend. She started going and shortly thereafter was the first one in her family to accept Jesus Christ as her Savior! Praise the Lord since then her two younger brothers and her parents have also accepted Christ and today are all faithfully serving Christ in their local churches (her father went to be with the Lord in January of 2023). At 18 years of age, Maribel went to Bible college where we met. Maribel and I were married on August 2nd, 2003 after I graduated from college. Maribel graduated in 2004 and in 2005 we started preparing to return to Brazil. We moved to Brazil with our two children, Abigail and Daniel in April of 2008. Our first two years were spent in the largest city in Brazil - São Paulo. My wife went to language school and I helped for a year in a new church plant together with another missionary and then oversaw that work while that missionary was in the States. I also taught in a Bible institute that was started while I was there. Today that work is still doing well under the leadership of a national pastor. After those two years, the Lord took me six hours west to work in the city of Londrina together with a national pastor. There we were able to help establish the main church, start a congregation in a neighboring city as well as help start another Bible institute. We taught in this institute until the first students graduated in 2015. From that graduating class a national leader was left in the congregation and we moved eight hours northeast to the city of Taubaté to start New Life Baptist Church. When we moved to Taubaté we did not know a single soul. We stepped out by faith and have seen the Lord do amazing things in the Paraiba Valley. We held the inauguration service of New Life Baptist Church on September 19th, 2015 with one hundred seventeen people present and five decisions for Christ! Throughout our first month, we had over one hundred fifty first-time visitors walk through the doors of NLBC and forty-six professions of faith! Now, after five and a half years, we have outgrown our space and relocated twice, have a full-time Bible institute with an average of fifteen to twenty students per semester, have two graduates serving on the field, have around eight other members who are called and are preparing for the ministry, support eleven missionary families, have assisted in a church plant in the neighboring city of Pinda, are praying about and making preparations to start a congregation in Caçapava, another neighboring city. To God be the glory for the things He has done! We are raising money to be able to purchase our own property in a fund-raising project called the Nehemiah Project. Our goal is for this work to become completely autonomous, indigenous, self-supporting, and self-replicating; and then focus our energies toward new church plants. The Nehemiah Project is a huge step in this direction. Though the Lord has blessed us we are under-supported and in need of raising some more support to allow us to continue focusing on the ministry in Brazil. Would you pray about allowing us to present our ministry to your church as well as about partnering with us for the glory of God and for the furtherance of the Gospel unto the uttermost parts of the earth?

Last weekend the teachers of our kids ministries had an intensive training time. We strive to give our teachers the tools they need to reach our kids guiding the kids to our Lord and Savior. It was a blessed time. We are thankful for these servants of God who love the Lord and make themselves available to touch the lives of these little ones.

This past week here in Brazil the country celebrated Carnival which is a catholic holiday before lent season dedicating several days to the flesh. There is lots of drinking, imorality and lewdness during these days. As a church it was a perfect time to get away from the noise of this world and spend some time in fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

This Saturday, we celebrated one more Bible institute graduation! After three years of dedication and perseverance, despite the difficulties he faced, Toni successfully completed his studies.

Toni arrived at our church in 2016 along with his siblings and family. He is an example of God’s transforming power. Although he was already saved when he came to us, here he was able to grow and strengthen his convictions.

Over the years, Toni and his family have faithfully served alongside us, helping lead Jr. church, then, the youth group. More recently he has also been serving and assisting Pastor Diego, his brother, in the church plant in Caçapava. I am excited to see how God will continue to use his life!

There is no better way to start a new year than by seeking God through prayer. From January 11th through the 18th, we gathered together as a church for our first week this year of prayer. These were precious days in the presence of the Lord; seeking His guidance; surrendering our plans; and trusting in His care. God is good, and we have already seen answers to many of the prayer requests made during this time.

In addition to our time together at church, we were also able to gather in the homes of some brothers and sisters for these moments of prayer. I am grateful to all of you who have been praying with us and for us. I ask that you continue to pray for us - for God’s work to continue to be done here in Brazil and in the Paraiba Vale.

We finished 2025 with many blessings from the Lord! After a year of hard work, December is always a month full of joyful and special moments.

The church choir presented a special Christmas cantata in three cities, sharing the Gospel and beautiful music with the people of Pindamonhangaba, Caçapava, and Taubaté. On the day of the cantata at our church, we held our “Children’s Christmas,” where more than 50 children, many from our outreach program, received shoes, clothing, and a toy. Our main goal was for the people who donated these gifts and the kids´ parents to be present at church and hear the Gospel.

Mariana was the last baptism of the year. She moved here from another city and came to our church at the beginning of this year with her daughter. Since then, she was saved, has been growing in the Lord, and, in December, became a member of our church.

I also celebrated my 46th birthday. I´m thankful for a caring church and for all that God has been doing in my life and my family´s life.

Highlights of a Blessed November

November was a special month for our church. A group from our church attended a family camp in Sumaré, São Paulo, where I had the opportunity to preach and serve. It was a valuable time of fellowship and edification alongside pastors and their churches from various regions of Brazil.

We were also grateful for a meaningful meeting with the ladies of our church. My wife taught a thoughtful lesson on modesty and on serving in a manner that honors the Lord. It was an enriching moment of learning and unity.

In addition, we held our annual Thanksgiving activity with our youth group. Each year, they gather to celebrate with games, gift exchanges, and traditional food, making it a joyful and memorable occasion. Here are some pictures:

A Joyful 10-Year Celebration!

This September we joyfully celebrated our church’s 10th anniversary! My brother, Allen, and a team of 16 came from the States to help us reach our city. Together, we shared over 30,000 John & Romans and invitations!

The anniversary weekend was such a blessing - the services were full, hearts were touched, and we saw 15 first-time visitors and 5 precious decisions for Christ. We are so thankful for all that God has done and excited about what He will continue to do. Thank you for praying, encouraging, and faithfully standing with us.

Blessed Conferences and Lasting Fruit

June and July were filled with blessings and spiritual growth. In June, we held our 4th Annual Youth Conference, with Missionary Evangelist Caleb Amoros, Bro. Jon Woosley, and a team of 18 from the United States. The event was greatly used by God, resulting in salvation decisions and young people dedicating their lives to Christ.

In July, we hosted our 2nd Leadership Conference, which showed significant growth from last year. Pastor John Wilkerson and Bro. Eddie Lapina served as our keynote speakers, and the Lord used them in a powerful way to challenge and encourage our leaders.

Both conferences strengthened our faith and renewed our commitment to serve the Lord with joy and dedication.

The Lord has been so good to us!

This year has been full of blessings and miracles. Our 2025 theme, “Enlarging Our Tents,” has come to life in amazing ways.

One of the greatest miracles has been the Lord’s provision for our church property! We are now in the final steps of purchasing it. We are truly grateful! We look forward to sharing more with you in the near future.

The Lord also allowed us this year to plant a new church plant - New Life Baptist Church in Caçapava, a neighboring city of 100,000 people about 30 minutes from Taubaté. Pastor Diego, who we ordained in April, is leading the work along with a few families from our church. The inauguration was a blessing, with a group from our sending church coming to help. We had 150 in attendance on Saturday night and an average of 40 for both Sunday services. Praise the Lord!
