SECOND DAY OF THE TRIDUUM
IN HONOR OF ST. DOMINIC DE GUZMAN
DAY 2 - The Miracle of the Repast of Angels
“Dominic Trusting in God’s Providence”
One day, St. Dominic and his friars had nothing to eat. There was no food in the priory and nothing to place on their table.
Yet St. Dominic asked the brothers to gather in the refectory for their meal.
At first, the brothers were worried. They knew very well that there was nothing to eat. Perhaps they wondered why Dominic was asking them to sit at an empty table. But they followed him and took their places.
Dominic then invited them to pray and entrust their need to God.
And God provided.
Then, according to Dominican tradition, two young men appeared carrying bread. They went around the tables, giving a loaf to each friar. When everyone had received bread, the two disappeared as mysteriously as they had come.
The friars believed that God had sent His angels to provide for them.
The Repast of the Angels reminds us of something we easily forget when we are worried: God knows what we need. God will provide. Deus Supplet!
There are moments when we do not know where help will come from. There are problems we cannot solve on our own and needs we cannot immediately provide for. Like St. Dominic, we are invited not to give in to fear, but to place our trust in the providence of God.
God may not always provide in the way we expect. His answer may come through another person, an unexpected opportunity, a door suddenly opened or simply the grace and strength to continue.
St. Dominic teaches us to pray, to trust, and to believe that God does not abandon those who place their lives in His hands.
PRAYER
Provident Father, you know our needs even before we ask. Through the intercession of St. Dominic, teach us to trust you especially in moments of uncertainty and need. Free our hearts from fear and anxiety, and give us confidence that you will never abandon us. May we also learn to become instruments of your providence by generously sharing what we have with those in need. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
