On 24th May, Bulgaria celebrates the Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education, culture, and of Slavic literature.
Saints Cyril and Methodius were brothers from Thessalonica who became apostles to the Slavic peoples. They traveled to Moravia in the ninth century. They developed an alphabet, later named Cyrillic in honor of St. Cyril, for the purpose of translating the scriptures and liturgical texts into Slavonic languages.
In 867 the brothers met Pope Hadrian II in Rome and were ordained bishops by him. Cyril died in Rome in 869 at the age of 42. Methodius returned to Moravia and continued his missionary work in Bohemia and Poland. He is said to have traveled as far as Moscow and established the diocese of Kyiv. He died in 885.
Together, Saints Cyril and Methodius are the patron saints of Slavic peoples and of ecumenism.
