Dear Friends,

Many of you have already heard of the passing of Nabeel Qureshi from his earthly sojourn into the arms of his Savior. He took his last breath just past midday on Saturday, September 16th. I had just left Manila for my next stop, so it was past the midnight hour for me. I did not get the news 'til I was on the ground several hours later.

Our loss is deep and our hearts heavy. Yes, we dreaded this moment, but it is here. Our Lord understands. Even He wept over Lazarus, knowing all along that He would raise him. The pain of death is real. Even short farewells are painful. I have a flood of memories. I have posted an obituary on certain publications, at their request. It is amazing that a life so brief had an impact so big. That is rare and is a tribute to an amazing man. I will miss his voice on the phone saying, "Hello, uncle." I will miss his memorable smile. Most importantly, I will miss watching him preach with an anointing that was rare. I will write more later. For now, I just wanted to say how saddened we are by the loss of a fellow apologist whose powerful messages changed tens of thousands that heard him.

Goodbye, my dear friend. I mourn your loss. I weep over a friendship that was so short. You taught me so much. You often asked me after a message, "Uncle, how did I do?" My delight was great. Greater will be your delight now as you ask your Lord and your God, "Father, how did I do?" You will hear the divine accolade: "Well done, my child."

I love you, Nabeel. You will remain forever in my heart.

See you soon, beloved friend.

Adoniram Judson

“There is no success without sacrifice.”

He was three years old when he read an entire chapter of the Bible to his father. He was ten years old when he took navigation lessons. He was sixteen years old when he went to college. He was twenty years old when he trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

On August 9, 1788, Adoniram Judson was born in a worn-down wooden house in Malden, Massachusetts. From the time he was a little boy, he was more interested in reading than in playing with his friends. He intended to grow up and become a lawyer or a government official, and he was certainly smart enough to do both! Following college, he started his own school and wrote his own textbooks. Then God took hold of Judson’s life.

Judson dedicated his life to Christ and to the mission field of India on December 2, 1808. He and his wife Ann became the first Protestant missionaries ever to be sent from North America (they became Baptists while studying during their boat trip to India).

After working in India, they moved their ministry to Burma. Using the incredible intelligence God gave him, Judson translated the Bible into Burmese, wrote hymns, inspired missionaries to join him on the field, and shared God’s message of salvation wherever he went. He took only one furlough (a break or vacation), and he died during his last voyage home.

Back when he was in seminary, Judson sent a letter to his future wife. It said, “I have some hope that I shall be enabled to keep this in mind, in whatever I do – IS IT PLEASING TO GOD?”

How often do we ask ourselves that important question? Whom do we seek to please? How about when no one is looking – are you constantly seeking to live your life before God? God is pleased and honored when we seek to glorify and enjoy Him.

Galatians 1:10 – For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

God Delights To Answer Prayer

"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" (Matthew 7:11).

Regular readers, please see a special note for you at the foot of this devotional.*

When Michele was eleven, her best friend left their school to go to a different school. Michele's class was small, and she didn't feel close to any of the other three girls in the class. She wanted so much to have a best friend that she could talk to.

That summer before sixth grade, Michele's mom said, "Why don't you pray that God will send a new girl to your class next year to be your close friend?" She took her mom's advice and started praying. But she didn't have much faith. Where would a new girl come from? And even if a new girl did come, would she really want to be her friend? Michele dreaded the beginning of the new school year, because she didn't believe God would answer her prayer.

Then in August, a new girl named Kelly and her family started coming to Michele's church. God had moved her all the way to Kansas from the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean! That fall, Kelly was in Michele's sixth grade class. She was so cheerful and friendly that it was easy for Michele to get to know her. They quickly became best friends and went through the rest of high school together. They even attended the same college for four years, and still keep in touch today.

Michele would tell you now that God delights to answer the prayers of His children. It brings Him glory when we ask and truly depend on Him for things we need. If we ask for things that are good for us, He is pleased to give them to us at just the right time. But sometimes He goes beyond giving us what we ask for. Often, His gifts are better than anything we could have asked for or even imagined. And His gifts are always the best thing for us.

God delights to answer the prayers of His children.

My Response:
» What am I praying for?
» Am I praying with faith that God will answer in the best way?

Moses

February 21
Exodus 4:18, 27-31

Two can do it

Moses went back home to his father-in-law Jethro and told him that he was going to return to Egypt. Then he took his wife and his sons—and the special stick God had told him to take—and started on his journey.

Meanwhile, the Lord had told Aaron to meet Moses in the desert. So Aaron met him at the holy mountain. There, Moses told his brother everything the Lord had said.

Together, Moses and Aaron went to the leaders of the Israelites and told them that the Lord would free them from the Egyptians. After that, Moses did miracles as a sign of God’s power, and the people believed them.

Should I trust God to help me do a task on my own, or should I ask others for help?

Sometimes God may tell you to do something He knows you can’t do in your own strength. If He has promised to help you do a job on your own, He wants you to trust Him and not rely on others to make your task easier. However, at other times God wants us to work together with those whose strengths can help our weaknesses.

Whenever we do something for God, we need to be humble; either by relying on God to use us in spite of our weaknesses, or by letting others help us and allowing them to share in the joy of serving God.

Remember though, if we make excuses and expect God to use someone else to do the work, we cannot grow in our faith. God wants us to learn to depend on Him and also be willing to humbly work side by side with others.

Verse for today

“The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor” 1 Corinthians 3:8.

God Hears

"I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live." (Psalm 116:1-2)

Have you ever tried to talk to someone who isn't paying attention to you? You probably feel frustrated or discouraged if you think you aren't being heard. It is encouraging, though, for God's children to remember that God always hears them when they pray to Him. He is never too busy to listen to His children. And He is never uninterested in what they have to say. No matter what time of day it is or where you are, God always hears you.

Sometimes, though, God is the last person Christians go to when they're having troubles. Instead of going to God, they sulk. Or they go to their unsaved friends. Their friends may be good listeners, but they have no power to give true answers. Maybe God's children do go to a godly friend or parent with their problems. But the whole time, they may be resisting God, using Him as a "last resort" only.

Who is the person you go to when you are feeling sad, or when you have a need, or when you don't know how to handle a problem? Do you go to God first? Once you truly understand that the sovereign God is always available, always ready to hear your supplications (your strong requests), you will agree with the psalmist who wrote, "I will call upon Him as long as I live"!

God always hears His children when they call to Him.

My Response:
» Do I go to God first with my problems, or do I use Him as a "last resort"?

Joseph

February 8
Genesis 41:1-36

Seven fat cows

Joseph had been in prison for a long time when the king of Egypt had a dream. The king dreamed he was standing at the Nile River when he saw seven thin cows eat up seven fat cows; but the thin cows stayed thin.

When the king woke up, he remembered the dream and called his wise men and magicians, hoping that they could explain the dream to him. But no one could!

One of the king’s servants, who had been in prison with Joseph, remembered that Joseph had told him the meaning of his dream. He told the king about Joseph. So the king sent for him.

Joseph said to the king, “I cannot tell you the meaning of your dream, but God can. This is what it means. There will be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. You must store up food during the seven good years so that you will have enough during the seven years of famine.”

Will God give me the right words to say?

Do you think Joseph was nervous when he stood in front of the king? What if he couldn’t figure out the king’s dream either? Thoughts of staying in prison for life, or even being killed, wouldn’t be helpful when everyone’s eyes were on him.

But Joseph remembered how—through a dream—God had showed him what would happen in his life. He told the king that God alone could give him the meaning of his dream, and God did!

If you honor God as Joseph did, He will also give you the right words to say as you trust Him to guide your thoughts.

Verse for today

“Do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say” Luke 12:11b-12.
