The Chapel for Europe, a.k.a. Chapel of the Resurrection, is a Catholic Chapel with an Ecumenical orientation in the heart of Brussels’ European quarter.

The Chapel for Europe, of which the pastoral responsibility is held by the Society of Jesus, is open to all those who work, live or simply pass through the ’European Quarter’ of Brussels, marked by the presence of the principal European Union institutions. The Chapel offers hospitality in an ecumenical spirit, with a view to challenge divisiveness. It symbolises, therefore the potential unity amon

g different peoples and mentalities, so illustrating a creative reconciliation rooted in the Resurrection of Christ. As a place of communion, prayer and silence, the Chapel is also a room of exchange, dialogue and sharing for all those involved in European integration.

To mark the upcoming World Refugee Day (20 June), the Chapel for Europe hosted the event "Where Hope Meets Hospitality" on 11 June, in collaboration with Jesuit Refugee Service Europe - JRSEurope, Don Bosco International, the Community of Sant'Egidio België/BelgiqueSant’Egidio, and the Africa Europe Faith & Justice Network (AEFJN).

The event brought together organisations working with refugees and migrants to share experiences, best practices, and successful initiatives that promote inclusion, dignity, and social integration.

The evening opened with a personal testimony from Elvis Ng’andwe (AEFJN), who reflected on the challenges faced by many migrants and refugees and highlighted how support, solidarity, and opportunities can help people rebuild their lives.

During the round table, JRS Europe presented projects including Paths of Hospitality, the Balseskin Reception Centre in Dublin, and the Women’s Day Centre in Greece. These examples reaffirm how welcoming communities and spaces of accompaniment can
foster a sense of belonging and give support and hope to people on the move.
Bosco-Avenir shared its work with unaccompanied minors in France, where a multidisciplinary team supports young migrants through health checks, language courses, and an introduction to French culture. By preparing them for school or vocational training, the programme helps young people feel safe, build confidence, and gradually integrate into French society.
Sant’Egidio presented the experience of the Kamiano Soup Kitchen in Brussels, where hospitality helps people build new social connections and find support.

The presentations and active Q&A session highlighted a common conclusion: collaboration among faith-based, humanitarian, and civil society organisations is essential for building more inclusive communities. The examples presented showed that hospitality is not only an act of welcome but also a practical pathway to hope, integration, and participation in society.

The evening concluded with informal networking and fellowship, providing a space to continue the conversation and deepen collaboration among organisations that place human dignity at the heart of their work and accompany people on the move.

Last Tuesday, 9 June, the Chapel for Europe participated in the Article 17 TFEU dialogue seminar on "Health and Well-being in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Communities Tackling Isolation and Digital Risks", bringing together European experts, representatives of churches, religious communities, philosophical and non-confessional organisations.

Participants from all three panels highlighted that AI can support healthcare, learning, work tasks and social connection, but also poses serious risks, including isolation, emotional dependency, harmful content, privacy violations, and negative impacts on mental health and critical thinking. Young people and children, as the most active users of AI and the future of our society, require particular attention and protection.

The discussions strongly emphasized the need to strike the right balance between innovation and regulation. AI's development must be accompanied by appropriate safeguards and human oversight. Europe’s human-centric approach to AI was presented as essential: technology should serve people, strengthen human dignity, and support communities rather than replace human relationships and care.

The conclusion was clear: AI must remain a tool for human flourishing. Its future should be shaped not only by technological progress but also by ethical responsibility, strong safeguards, digital literacy, and a commitment to keeping human connection at the heart of society.

By amplifying positive voices and best practices, this event aims to inspire change, foster empathy, and build a more inclusive society for refugees and migrants where hope meets hospitality.

Jesuit Refugee Service Europe is pleased to invite you to the final event of the Together for Change project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme.

The event, “Empowering Youth, Schools, and Communities for Inclusive Societies," will bring together schools, students, educators, migrants and refugees, and civil society organizations from across Europe to share experiences, educational practices, and student-led solidarity actions developed throughout the project.

The programme will include:
• Presentation of the T4C educational tools and methodologies for teachers and educators
• Students’ testimonies and solidarity actions from participating countries
• A panel discussion on inclusive education, youth participation, and active citizenship
• Networking opportunities with educators and organisations engaged in inclusive learning and community building.

The event will take place at the Museum of Migration in Brussels on 27 May 2026 from 09:30 to 13:00.

Une messe très spéciale a été célébrée aujourd’hui à la Chapelle pour l’Europe en communion avec les chrétiens d’Orient, réunissant les fidèles dans un moment de prière, d’unité et d’espérance.

Organisée conjointement par la Chapelle pour l’Europe et L’Œuvre d’Orient à l’occasion du 170e anniversaire de L’Œuvre d’Orient, cette célébration a mis en lumière la richesse et la diversité de l’Église universelle.

La messe a été concélébrée par Mgr Hanna Jalouf, Vicaire apostolique d’Alep, Mgr Jacques Mourad, archevêque syriaque catholique de Homs, le Père Youssef Nasser, Secrétaire général des écoles catholiques du Liban, Mgr Hugues de Woillemont, Directeur général de L’Œuvre d’Orient, ainsi que le Père Bernd Guenther SJ de la Chapelle pour l’Europe.

La liturgie a été marquée par de très beaux chants et une profonde communion spirituelle. Dans une homélie particulièrement émouvante, Mgr Jacques Mourad a établi un lien puissant entre la première lecture et sa propre expérience bouleversante d’emprisonnement et de torture. Il a partagé comment il avait ressenti la présence du Seigneur à ses côtés, lui apportant réconfort et espérance au cœur de la souffrance.

L'un des moments émouvants a été lorsque certains concélébrants et fidèles ont récité le « Notre Père » en arabe, tandis que tous les autres le priaient dans leur propre langue ; un signe fort de l'unité de l'Église au-delà des cultures et des nations.

Ce fut un véritable honneur pour la Chapelle pour l’Europe d’accueillir cette célébration si particulière aux côtés des responsables et fidèles des Églises orientales.
