Seguramente una de las cosas más bonitas en las ordenaciones sacerdotales es ver el cambio en el rostro de quienes son ordenados. Cuando termina el rito y reciben el abrazo del obispo y de sus compañeros, la tensión y los nervios acumulados durante los días previos dan paso a la alegría sincera de un rostro sonriente y relajado.

Es lo que hemos visto en la mañana del sábado en la iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Barcelona en los rostros de los jesuitas Luis Argila y Alex Escoda, y del escolapio Albert Moliner, que han recibido la ordenación sacerdotal en una celebración sencilla y emotiva. Ha sido presidida por el obispo auxiliar de Barcelona, Mons. David Abadías, y concelebrada por los superiores provinciales de los jesuitas y de los escolapios, Enric Puiggròs y Jordi Vilà, respectivamente, así como por numerosos compañeros sacerdotes. Familiares, amigos y amigas han llenado a rebosar la iglesia de la calle Casp, con una relevante presencia de la vida religiosa.

La alegría que hoy se dibujaría con tanta claridad en el rostro de los tres nuevos sacerdotes ha sido también el punto de partida de la homilía del obispo David Abadías. Tras los intensos días vividos con la visita del Santo Padre, qué alegría más grande podíamos tener que esta celebración, decía. A continuación, se ha dirigido a los tres protagonistas para recordarles que su vida está entregada a Dios, para alabarlo sirviendo a los demás. El mandamiento de amar a Dios y a los demás tal como él nos ama, ha dicho, “debe estar profundamente arraigado en vuestra vocación”. También ha recordado a san Ignacio de Loyola y a san José de Calasanz, fundadores respectivamente de los jesuitas y de los escolapios, que “son para vosotros testigos y guías: bajo su luz, la luz de su carisma, encontraréis fuente de sabiduría”.

From May 18th to May 23rd, the members of the JCEP Groups on Vocation Promotion and Young Adult Ministry gathered together in Son Bono, the Jesuit retreat house in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. 22 participants from both groups, representing the majority of the provinces in Europe, came together to discuss the situation of these two strategic fields of apostolic work. Among the participants there were Jesuits but also some lay people, which made the group very rich and lively. The meeting had been prepared by the members of both steering committees: Benoît de Maintenant SJ, Fonfo Alonso Lasheras SJ, Duarte Rosado SJ, and Mislav Skelin SJ, from the Vocation Promotion Group; and Walter Ceyssens SJ and Leonardo Vezzani SJ from the Young Adult Ministry Group.

A 2025 study commissioned by the German Catholic Bishops' Conference offers a powerful answer: we need a systemic framework that integrates ecological limits, social justice, and global responsibility. These challenges can’t be addressed separately.

On Monday, 22 June, Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC) and European Laudato Si' Alliance (ELSiA) are hosting an event that brings ethical, political, and practical voices into the same room. Dr Stefan Eisiedel — Scientific Secretary to the Expert Panel — will present the study's core findings and explore their implications for the EU's Common Agricultural Policy reform.

Pope Leo XIV has elevated Fr. Anthony J. Corcoran, SJ, to the office of bishop. A member of the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province, Fr. Corcoran has served as apostolic administrator of Kyrgyzstan since 2017 and will continue there as bishop.

“I pray that this decision of the Church to call me to the episcopacy may truly encourage and strengthen the faithful and serve for the common good of this society,” Bishop-elect Corcoran said. “I can affirm that I am called increasingly to give all, to be ‘all in,’ with regard to my vocation to give myself to this community.”

It is estimated that there are currently only a few hundred Catholics living in Kyrgyzstan. Despite the declining numbers, the Church remains vibrant, Bishop-elect Corcoran said, with a notable number of social and educational activities.

Father Corcoran’s lengthy service to the Church in the former Soviet bloc was inspired by his predecessors in the Society of Jesus: “As a novice, I read the remarkable stories of the great missionaries in the Society’s — and our provinces’ – history. I became interested in the possibility of serving in Russia. At the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Holy Father asked for Jesuits (among other orders) to go to the Soviet Union to find and serve the Catholics who had held onto their faith throughout the terrible persecution of the communists.”

Bart van Emmerik is the new Regional Superior of ELC - European Low Countries Region

Nieuwe regionale overste voor de jezuïeten in de Lage Landen: Bart van Emmerik sj

Antwerpen, 20 mei 2026

Pater Generaal Arturo Sosa heeft Bart van Emmerik op 19 mei benoemd tot nieuwe regionaal overste van de ELC. De precieze startdatum van zijn regionalaat moet nog bepaald worden.

Bart van Emmerik is 63 jaar oud, geboren op 21 oktober 1962. Hij bracht zijn jeugd door in Haarlem. Thuis had zijn creatieve en durvende vader een grafisch bedrijf. Zijn ouders, beiden overleden, waren geëngageerd in Marriage Encounter. Bart groeide op met een oudere zus, een broer en een neef – wiens ouders waren overleden – in een warm en verwelkomend gezin.

Na middelbare school (VWO) en economiestudie begon hij op 19 september 1982 zijn noviciaat te Oudergem Brussel. Bart is dus bijna 44 jaar in de Sociëteit. Filosofie studeerde hij in het Centrum voor Kerkelijke Studies te Leuven waarna collegewerk volgde vanuit onze Stanislasresidentie te Delft. Hij studeerde theologie in Amsterdam - van ’88 tot ’94 - met ook een parochiestage in Delft. Op 3 oktober 1993 werd hij priester gewijd door Mgr. De Hovre sj.

Zijn eerste zending betrof het pastoraal team van de parochiefederatie Nootdorp en Pijnacker van 1994 tot 1999. Daarna volgde het tertiaat in de USA met een lang en beklijvend experiment in de Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, South-Dakota, in een reservaat van Native Americans. Bart sprak zijn laatste geloften uit in juni 2001. Van 2000 tot 2002 was hij pastor in het Reinier de Graafziekenhuis en daarnaast spirituaal van de priesteropleiding Vronesteyn van het bisdom Rotterdam.

Er loopt een sterke spiritualiteitslijn door zijn jezuïetenleven. Vanaf 2002 werkte Bart in ons bezinningscentrum Godsheide als adjunct-directeur, tot de sluiting eind 2006. Hij verhuisde toen naar ons bezinningscentrum in Drongen, als vice-overste van de communiteit. Eind 2013 werd hij directeur van het Ignatiushuis te Amsterdam en ontwikkelde daar het Platform voor Ignatiaanse Spiritualiteit. Hij is tot op vandaag gedelegeerde voor de ignatiaanse spiritualiteit. Bart is een expert in gemeenschappelijke onderscheiding en Ignatian Leadership.

Dit niet alleen in de DICAP van onze regio maar ook voor andere religieuze organisaties en in toenemende mate internationaal. Hij leidt momenteel het vierkoppig team van de belangrijke West-Europese Common Mission Retreat van 6 tot 15 juli eerstkomend. 1 van 2Daarnaast was Bart ook lid van de roepingencommissie, algemeen kerkelijk assistent van GCL Nederland en assistent van Marriage Encounter. Op bestuursvlak is Bart al bijna 25 jaar consultor, eerst van de Nederlandse provincie, na de fusie van de ELC. Hij was meermaals lid van de Provinciale Congregatie en medebegeleider van het Soeterbeeck-proces. Na een sabbattijd in Noord-Ierland eind 2019, werd hij op 1 januari 2020 socius van de regionaal. Bart is Nederlander maar heeft als jezuïet meer dan twintig jaar in Vlaanderen gewoond. Bart heeft dus een grondig inzicht in vele dossiers, medewerkers en structuren van onze regio.

Hij is diep overtuigd van de waarde van samenwerking tussen jezuïeten en medewerkers, gemeenschappelijke onderscheiding en het belang van het Ignatiaans Netwerk. Bart heeft een regelmatig gebedsleven en verwerkt veel al fietsend.

We wensen socius Bart een goede overgangsfase naar het regionalaat, en vragen dat ieder hem meedraagt in haar of zijn gebed en dat God hem overvloedig mag zegenen met alle nodige genades.
