A renewed heart
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me” (Ps 51:10).
“May God grant us the right intention in all these things and that we might not consent knowingly to sin; for in this way, even though the battery of temptation be great and of many kinds, one will walk safely” (Letter 29, 22 August 1591).
I will place my trust in God for the spiritual struggle and take from the example of Christ the desire to please the Father in all things.

Take up the Cross with Christ
“Then he said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it’” (Lk 9:23–24).
“Those who have no other goal than the perfect observance of the Lord‘s law and the carrying of the cross of Christ will be true arks [of the covenant], and they will bear within themselves the real manna, which is God” (The Ascent of Mount Carmel, I.5.8).
What aspect of my daily life can I offer to the Lord? The one that seems to be an obstacle on my path, so that I may discover God’s presence at my side. Throughout this Lent, may this cross be transfigured and become a path for me to grow in deeper trust in God, who can bring forth life even at the heart of painful situations.

Let us journey through this Lenten Season with St. John of the Cross...

Entrusting this Lent to God
“The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and
forevermore” (Ps 121:8).
“Going everywhere, my God, with you, everywhere things will happen as I desire for you” (Sayings of Light and Love, 53).
At the threshold of this Lent, I fi nd myself full of good resolutions… What if I were
to place everything into God’s hands? He is the fi rst to lead me along this path
opening before us, a path we will walk together. How good it will be to let myself
be led, attentive to what his Spirit whispers to me day after day.

For every one of us there is a chalice that the Father offers us to drink. We have difficulty recognizing it as coming from him, since a great deal of its contents comes from other people. Nevertheless, it is the Father who asks us to drink the bitter cup. It was so for Jesus, and it is the same for us.
