বরিশাল শহর থেকে ২২ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমে বানারীপাড়া সড়কসংলগ্ন উজিরপুর উপজেলায় এই গুঠিয়া গ্রামের অবস্থান। বরিশাল-বানারীপাড়া সড়ক ধরে এগুলেই উজিরপুর উপজেলা। সড়কের পাশে গুঠিয়ার চাংগুরিয়া গ্রাম। এ গ্রামেই আছে বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের বৃহৎ গুঠিয়া মসজিদ। ২০০৩ সালের ১৬ ডিসেম্বর উজিরপুরের গুঠিয়া ইউনিয়নের বাসিন্দা শিক্ষানুরাগী ও রাজনৈতিক ব্যক্তিত্ব এস. সরফুদ্দিন আহম্মেদ সান্টু চাংগুরিয়ার নিজ বাড়ির সামনে প্রায় ১৪ একর জমির উপর ভিত্তি প্রস্তর স্থাপনের মধ্য দিয়ে ব্যক্তিগতভাবে গুঠিয়া বাইতুল আমান জামে মসজিদ-ঈদগাহ্ কমপ্লেক্স এর নির্মাণ কার্যক্রম শুরু করেন। ৩ বছর মেয়াদের মধ্যে উক্ত নির্মাণকাজ বাস্তবায়নের দায়িত্বে ছিলেন এস. সরফুদ্দিনের ছোট ভাই মোঃ আমিনুল ইসলাম নিপু। তিনি ২০০৬ সালে উক্ত জামে মসজিদ-ঈদগাহ্ কমপ্লেক্সের নির্মাণ কাজ সম্পন্ন করেন। তার নির্মাণাধীন সময়কালের মধ্যে তিনি একটি বৃহৎ মসজিদ-মিনার, ২০ হাজার অধিক ধারণক্ষমতা সম্পন্ন ঈদগাহ্ ময়দান, এতিমখানা, একটি ডাকবাংলো নির্মাণ, গাড়ি পার্কিং ব্যবস্থা, লেক-পুকুর খনন কাজ সহ বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির গাছ রোপন-ফুল বাগান তৈরি ও লাইটিং ব্যবস্থা সম্পন্ন করেন। ওই নির্মাণ কাজে প্রায় ২ লাখ ১০ হাজার নির্মাণ শ্রমিক কাজ করেছে বলে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ জানায়। পরে গুঠিয়ার নামেই মসজিদটি পরিচিতি লাভ করে। চাংগুরিয়া গ্রামের ব্যবসায়ী এস সরফুদ্দিন আহমেদ এটির নির্মাণ ব্যয় বহন করেন। কমপ্লেক্সের মূল প্রবেশপথের ডানে বড় পুকুর। পুকুরের পশ্চিম দিকে মসজিদ। মসজিদ লাগোয়া মিনারটির উচ্চতা ১৯৩ ফুট।
মসজিদের স্তম্ভটি বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন পবিত্র স্থানের মাটি ও জমজম এর পানি দিয়ে তৈরি করা হয়েছে। যেসব স্থান থেকে মাটি সংগৃহীত হয়েছে সেগুলো হলো কাবা শরীফ, আরাফাহ এর ময়দান, মুযদালিফাহ, ময়দানে মিনা, জাবালে নূর পাহাড়, জাবালে সূর পাহাড়, জাবালে রহমত পাহাড়, নবীজীর জন্মস্থান, মা হাওয়া এর কবরস্থান, মসজিদে রহমত, মসজিদ এ কু’বা, ওহুদের যুদ্ধের ময়দান, হযরত হামজা (রাঃ) এর মাজার, মসজিদে আল কিবলাতাইন, মসজিদে হযরত আবু বক্কর (রাঃ), জান্নাতুল বাকী, মসজিদে নববী, জুলহুলাইফা-মিকাত, বড় পীর হযরত আব্দুল কাদের জিলানী (রহঃ) এর হাতের লেখা তাবিজ ও মাজারে পাওয়া দুটি পয়সা এবং হযরত খাজা মঈনুদ্দীন চিশতী (রহঃ) এর মাজারের মাটি।

Located in Uzirpur Upazilla, which is only a 40-minute drive from Barisal town, the mosque is perhaps the best tourist attraction in Barisal from the architectural point of view. Everyday about 200 visitors -- and not less than 1,000 every Friday -- visit the complex not only to pray inside the palatial mosque but also to stroll around the adjacent compound of 14 acres of landscape. The mosque having 7,000 square feet floor area can accommodate up to 1,500 Muslim devotees at a time for any prayer. A beautifully designed flight of stairs, reinforced embankment with squares of tiles on the western side of the lake, open lounge around the lake with concrete benches, and other architectural features are enlaced by shading trees and conifers to offer a visitor a serene respite from the suffocating heat on a summer day. Mr. S. Sharfuddin Ahmed Shantu, aged 65, reportedly a businessman in export-import trades, had spent more than Taka 100 million (10 crore) from his personal fund and took almost three years to build the complex and made it open for public use in 2006.
