بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
How does the Quran introduce itself to us?
As we commence Ramadhaan, many if us will begin with the first Juz of the Quran. In this Juz, in Surah alBaqrah, the Quran introduces itself to us:
This is the Book, there is no doubt in it (Verse 2)
and It further introduces itself as, That which was revealed to you (Oh Nabi) (Verse 4)
In these two verses, the Quran describes itself as a Book of no doubt and as that which was revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ.
Each of the previous Prophets عليهم السلام had told their Ummats about the coming of the Final Messenger ﷺ and the Final Book (The Quran). Thus we can understand the verse as, This is The Book (which each Nabi was speaking about) there's no doubt about it. (Tafseer Raazi)
So, from the very beginning, the Quran teaches us two of its characteristics:
-free from doubt, and
-revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ.
It also means, that casting doubt on the Quran or claiming the Quran was also revealed to anyone other than RasoolAllah ﷺ is against the Quran.
Surah alBaqrah goes on further to talk about those who do cast doubt on the Quran:
If you have doubt concerning that We have revealed to Our esteemed servant then obtain a chapter like it (verse 23) ... and We declare that you will not be able to (verse 24)
Again we see that Surah alBaqrah has paired the two concepts, free from doubt and revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ. This time, Allah ﷻ challenges those who cast doubt on the Quran and that it was revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ, to try to produce another chapter of the Quran.
The sad reality is that a deviant sect has taken up the challenge.
1. They cast doubt on the Quran. They have put forth various theories tryong to undermine that there is no doubt in the Quran. Have they forgotten Surah alBaqrah has declared, This is the Book, there is no doubt in it (Verse 2)
2. They claim that the verses of the Quran were revealed to Sayyidah Faatima رضي الله عنها or to the Imam of the era. Have they forgotten, Surah alBaqrah has declared the Quran as, That which was revealed to you (Oh Nabi) (Verse 4)
3. They add on verses of the Quran, claimimg that these were verses were omitted by the Sahaba or they add verses claiming it was revealed to Sayyidah Faatima رضي الله عنها or an Imam. Effectively, in this way, they are trying to add to the Quran.
Lets recall, Allah ﷻ has challenged those who doubt the Quran and that It was revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ, to produce a chapter like It. And here we find this deviant sect has taken up the challenge against Allah ﷻ. Under the guise of 'Sahaba ommited' and 'revealed to Sayyidah Faatimah رضي الله عنها' they have produced their own verses and want to add it to the Quran.
Alhamdulillah, we are not naive to aacept them. And furthermore, Allah ﷻ has fore-warned
And believe in that which I have revealed.... and do not mix Truth with falsehood. (Surah alBaqrah v41-42) The mixing of truth with falsehood, refers to adding to the Quran. (Tafseer Imam Raazi)
We are fortune that Surah alBaqrah has guarded us against these false ideas. Surah alBaqrah first sets out the parameter. Doubt and Quran do not go together. (verse 2) The Quran is that which was revealed to RasoolAllah ﷺ. (verse4) Those who try to bring doubt to the Quran, will try to bring additional chapters of the Quran. (verse 23) and to seal the discussion, Allah ﷻ instructs, And believe in that which I have revealed.... and do not mix Truth with falsehood. (Surah alBaqrah v41-42) The mixing of truth with falsehood, refers to adding to the Quran. (Tafseer Imam Raazi)
So let us be cautious of the false claims of deviant sects.
