Islam guides us to protect certain parts of our lives. Here are 8 things to keep private, based on the Qurâan, Sunnah, and the wisdom of scholars:
1. Your Wealth and Success
Islam encourages modesty. Flaunting wealth or success can lead to jealousy (hasad), pride, and the evil eye (Ęŋayn).
âIndeed, Allah does not like the proud and boastful.â â Qurâan 4:36
2. Your Personal and Family Matters
Family issues and private conversations should remain within the home. Islam values the sanctity and privacy of households.
âThe most wicked among the people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Judgment will be the man who goes to his wife and she comes to him, then he discloses her secrets.â â Sahih Muslim
3. Your Sins
If Allah has concealed your sins, it is a mercy. Exposing them brings no good and may normalize wrongdoing.
âAll of my Ummah will be forgiven except those who sin openly...â â Sahih al-Bukhari
4. Your Future Plans
The Prophet īˇē said:
âSeek help in fulfilling your needs by being discreet, for everyone who is blessed is envied.â â Reported by al-Tabarani
Being discreet protects your goals from envy and interference.
5. Your Weaknesses and Vulnerabilities
Revealing personal struggles to the wrong people can lead to harm. Islam encourages trusting Allah and seeking wise counsel privately.
6. Your Relationship with Allah
Your worship, duâas, and spiritual struggles are between you and Allah. Focus on sincerity, not showing off.
âRiya (showing off in worship) is minor shirk.â â Ahmad
7. The Mistakes of Your Children
Protecting their dignity helps them learn and grow without public shame. Islam teaches mercy and correction in private.
8. Your Good Deeds
Deeds done secretly are more beloved to Allah. Sincerity is key to acceptance.
âThe one who gives charity and conceals it so that his left hand does not know what his right hand has givenâĻâ â Sahih al-Bukhari
Keeping these matters private nurtures humility, sincerity, and protection from harm.
