Tonight at the masjid, something important happened — and it is worth reflecting on as a community.

During Taraweeh, a few musallis raised two concerns. First, the Imam became emotional and shed tears during the recitation. Second, some felt that the prayer was becoming lengthy.

After the prayer, our Imam addressed the congregation with calmness and wisdom. He explained that he recites the Qur’an with proper Tajweed, a measured pace, and awareness of the meanings. At times, when the words of Allah deeply touch the heart, tears come — not intentionally, but sincerely, as a natural effect of the Qur’an.

He reminded us that Ramadan is not about rushing through the Qur’an, but about reciting it properly, reflecting upon it, and honoring it. He also made it clear that he will not compromise correct recitation or khushu’.

This is an important reminder for all of us.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.”
— Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:4)

Taraweeh is not a race. It is not simply about finishing quickly. It is about standing before Allah, listening with humility, and allowing His words to soften our hearts. When the Qur’an moves someone to tears, it is not weakness — it is tenderness of faith.

We all come to the masjid with different capacities. Some are elderly. Some have work early. Some have children. Islam teaches us to be considerate and patient with one another. At the same time, we must honor the sanctity of the Qur’an and the responsibility carried by the Imam.

Let us remember:

â€ĸ The Qur’an deserves care, not haste.
â€ĸ Our Imams carry a heavy amanah.
â€ĸ A soft heart should not be criticized.
â€ĸ Differences should not break brotherhood.

If standing for a longer period becomes difficult for someone, they may pray what they can and leave quietly without criticism. There is room in our deen for mercy and balance.

May Allah reward our Imam for upholding proper recitation.
May He unite our hearts.
May He make us among those who listen to the Qur’an and are moved and transformed by it.

Ramadan Mubarak 🤍
