"By their fruits you will know them."

St. Irenaeus lived by this verse...and you can too. Early in his life, his parents entrusted him to the care of St. Polycarp. Each day, Irenaeus would carefully watch Polycarp and listen to everything spoken by his holy mentor. Irenaeus absorbed everything. With a truly humble heart, Irenaues could see the fruit of Polycarp's holy life and desired nothing more than to make what he saw his own.

As he grew and was later sent to Gaul, his childlike humility rooted in observation once again came into play as he saw the fruit of the holy life of his new mentor, St. Pothinus. Pothinus ordained Irenaeus a priest and was later martyred. The fruit of martyrdom was not something that Irenaeus shied away from and in the year 202, he offered himself to the Lord through his own death at the hands of Emperor Severus.

Sometimes we can take an attitude of resignation when challenged to think about our own desire for holiness. We can read about great saints and think, "if I only had friends like them, I too could be holy." Yet, during his life, Irenaues did not yet have the title of "Saint" - nor did Polycarp or Pothinus. They were three regular guys striving to be close to the heart of God - and this unity eventually led them to sainthood. Let us learn from the humility of St. Irenaeus and look around us to see those who are living out their relationship with God well. Let us learn from the fruit of the unity with God in others and have a humble enough heart to say, "teach me." How are you and your friends seeking holiness?
